Toby Atwood, a rising senior at Thiel College and a member of the women’s tennis team, suddenly died over the weekend after collapsing during a half-marathon in Pennsylvania, school officials confirmed.

The 21-year-old Pennsylvania native was participating in the Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie on Sunday when she collapsed and died. Atwood’s cause of death was not immediately known.

Back in 2007, a promising teenage triathlete Thaddeus Cheong, 17, a first-year student at Raffles Junior College, collapsed after crossing the finish line in a South-east Asia Games selection race yesterday and died soon after. Thaddeus Cheong had just swum 1.5 km, cycled 40 km and run 10 km at Changi. He clocked a personal best of 2 hr 9 min, and came in third. Then he collapsed and passed away.

I was nowhere as fit as this triathlete in my younger days, but pushed myself really hard in OCS, playing football and various other sports owing to my competitive nature. I guess I am fortunate not to have any heart defect, but I heard of many younger and fitter individuals who dropped dead suddenly. A male colleague in his early 50s, collapsed and passed away while hiking with his family on vacation for example.
