Many foreign patients have voted with their feet by not coming to S'pore for their medical care, and more S'poreans are following suit by seeking cheaper treatment in Malaysia, Thailand and even India. The heightened competition among private hospitals here has not brought overall prices down in the medium to long term. In fact, prices have increased by about 20% per year.Correction :The Survey should be the Most Expensive Healthcare Systems in the world.

The mark-up on inpatient medication, laboratory and imaging tests as well as consumables (everyday items such as tissue paper and diapers) can be as much as 200%. When queried about items in the bill, cashiers routinely give reasons that the layman is in no position to verify.

That's where insurance comes into play. Unless of course you are the super high SES folks like Mugabe where that markup becomes irrelevant.

MOH has stated clearly that private hospital charges are not under its purview, so they have given these facilities a free hand to determine prices for both medicine and supplies. Is it any wonder that private hospital bills have almost tripled over the past 15 years or so?
