Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's government is facing collapse as the second-largest party in the coalition quit in the wake of a leaked phone call.
Border disputes
In recent months, Thailand and Cambodia have been actively disputing territorial claims in Surin, a province in northeastern Thailand.
Things have even escalated to a brief firefight, resulting in one death.
Since then, Thai and Cambodian leaders have been trying to manage the situation, balancing the need to reassure neighbouring governments and domestic populations.
Paetongtarn is under fire as one of those attempts appears to have backfired.
Diplomatic call
On Jun. 15, Paetongtarn spoke by telephone with Hun Sen, currently the President of the Cambodian Senate and former Prime Minister, in a bid to cool tensions.
A recording of the call has been leaked, highlighting an exchange where Paetongtarn appeared to criticise members of the Thai military, including the general in charge of Thai military forces in the disputed area.
The Bangkok Post quotes her as urging Hun Sen, who she called "uncle" out of politeness, to not listen to her "opponents", including the Commander of the Second Army Region.
She was referring to Thai general Boonsin Paadklang, who had earlier publicly said that Thailand was "ready to fight".
Paetongtarn appears to have told Hun Sen that Boonsin wanted to "look smart", or, as Al Jazeera translated: "look cool".
She also called him a "man of the opponents" or "of the other side".
Second party quits
The Bhumjaithai Party has interpreted these comments as denigrating the Thai army, and on Jun. 18, the party quit the governing coalition, as reported by The Nation.
The party announced in a statement its decision to quit, saying that the phone conversation between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen had "impacted Thailand's sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interests, and the Thai military".
The statement called on Paetongtarn to "take responsibility for compromising Thailand's honour, national dignity, the people, and the military".
The party has resigned from its government posts, including that of Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
The Bhumjaithai Party holds 69 out of 500 seats in the Thai parliament and was the second-largest party in the government, behind the 142 seats of Paetongtarn's Pheu Thai Party, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
But the Pheu Thai led government still what the Post calls a "comfortable majority", holding 261 seats, compared to the main opposition People's Party.
Opposition calls for resignation
The People's Party has added to the clamour for Paetongtarn's resignation..
The People's Party is the successor to the popular Move Forward Party, which won a shock majority in the 2023 general election.
During the election, both the MFP and Phue Thai campaigned against the military-backed government of then-PM Payuth Chanocha, who had risen to power after a coup in 2014.
The two parties had agreed to form a government, but MFP was unable to convince enough members of the conservative upper house of parliament to back it, and Pheu Thai eventually formed a government with pro-military parties such as Bhumjaithai.
MFP leaders viewed this as an act of betrayal and became the country's main opposition, albeit under the guise of the People's Party, as the MFP was dissolved by Thailand's judiciary shortly thereafter.
Paradorn Prisnananthakul, the PP's leader, was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying, "What happened marks the final blow to the credibility of Prime Minister Paetongtarn".
"Her action has completely destroyed public trust in the government."
He said that Paetongtarn should "show political responsibility" by dissolving her government and calling for new elections.
He warned that failure to do so could allow "pressure groups" to incite an incident that "could harm the democracy", tacitly warning of a coup.
Apology and support
On Jun. 19, Paetongtarn held a news conference where she apologised for the leaked audio, according to the Bangkok Post.
She said that Thailand did not have "time for infighting" and had to "protect our sovereignty".
She added that the government was ready to support the military "in all ways".
It remains to be seen if this will be enough to secure her government.
Fellow coalition partners the Democrats and the United Thai Nation party are due to meet on Jun. 19 to discuss next steps.
