Grace Fu says Singaporeans will end up paying for opposition’s GST promises

Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu says “it is easy for the opposition to criticise” the government’s GST increases but it is Singaporeans who will pay out of their own pocket for these promises.

Red Dot United chief Ravi Philemon had earlier called for the GST to be cut back from 9% to 7% during a televised roundtable discussion. "So good, such a lovely idea," Fu said. "But it is hard to pay for. After these nine days, after all the promises that have been made, who in the opposition is here to sign the cheques?"

Singapore, a little red dot on the world map has emerged as the world’s most expensive city in 2024. The Swiss bank assessed the prices of over 20 consumer goods and services consumed by the High Net Worth Individuals across 25 cities around the world to prepare this ranking. Sky-high property prices, exorbitant car ownership costs and expensive private medical care, among other factors, have kept Singapore the most expensive city for the super rich in 2024, according to a report by Julius Baer.

The Swiss bank analyzed the prices of 20 consumer goods and services bought and used by high net worth individuals across 25 cities to arrive at the rankings.

Singapore’s streak of being the world’s most expensive city continues in 2023, holding its place for the ninth time in eleven consecutive years. This year, we are tied with Zurich (Switzerland) that moved up from 6th place last year. We have also taken over New York, which has fallen to third place from the second spot last year.

We all probably felt the pinch too – as per the Worldwide Cost of Living survey conducted between August 14 and September 11, the prices of over 200 commonly used goods and services have risen by 7.4 percent globally in local-currency terms over the past year. Good news though, the rate of increase is lower than the 8.1 percent recorded in the previous year. However, it is still significantly higher than the trend between 2017 to 2021.

Across the ten categories featured in the survey’s pricing index, utility prices have shown a slower rate of increase over the past year, reflecting the impact of the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, the increase in grocery prices remains unwavering.

SINGAPORE maintained its spot as the most expensive city in the world, tying with Zurich, an annual survey showed on Thursday (Nov 30).

The pair overtook New York, which tied with Singapore last year for the pole position, based on findings from Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) cost-of-living survey.

The survey, designed to help organisations calculate cost-of-living allowances and build compensation packages for expatriates and business travellers, showed that the global cost-of-living crisis is not over despite inflation moderating.

Contrary to PAP beliefs, Sinkies are not idiots
They noted that PAP are the wealthy people with landed properties. Multi-millionairs. Million-dollar salaries all.
PAP will protect wealth and the wealthy ..... GST will not be reduced ... perhaps room for increase.
Cost of living is not a concern. Their concern.
The million dollar 3-room HDB flat will soon be upon us (now already reached $935K.
.
Vote fo the PAP for a dim future.
