International Whores' Day

French prostitutes are carted off to the Salpêtrière prison (Étienne Jeaurat, 1745)
'International Sex Workers Day on June 2 of each year, honours sex workers and recognises their often exploited working conditions. The event commemorates the occupation of Église Saint-Nizier in Lyon by more than a hundred sex workers on 2 June 1975 to draw attention to their inhumane working conditions.[1] It has been celebrated annually since 1976. In German, it is known as Hurentag (Whore's Day). In Spanish-speaking countries, it is the Día Internacional de la Trabajadora Sexual, the International Day of the Sex Worker. (The Spanish word "trabajadora" is feminine, recognizing that most sex workers are women.)

Background

Bronze statue Belle in front of the Oude Kerk in the De Wallen red-light district in Amsterdam. It was unveiled in March 2007 with the inscription "Respect sex workers all over the world."

In the 1970s, French police kept sex workers under increasing pressure. The police reprisals[1] forced sex workers to work increasingly in secret. As a result, protection of sex workers decreased and led to more violence against them. After two murders and the unwillingness of the government to improve the situation, sex workers in Lyon occupied the Saint-Nizier church in rue de Brest and went on strike. The striking workers sang political chants and demanded decent working conditions and an end to stigma.

"When we occupy the churches,

you are scandalised,

religious bigots!

You who threatened us with hell,

we have come to eat at your table,

at Saint Nizier.

[Protest song penned by sex workers who occupied French churches during an eight-day strike in 1975]

The police cleared the church after eight days.[2] The event marks the starting point of an international movement of sex workers for sex workers' rights.[3]

Germany

A reading entitled "Women without rooms" in Bochum, Germany on 29 May 2011 documented that the situation of sex workers has not improved since 1975. The reading was devoted to the sex workers of the neighbouring city of Dortmund, who are oppressed as the sex workers of Lyon were in 1975.[4]

Whatever it is, don't ever name your daughter or even suggest a name BELLE as a Christian name for anyone, otherwise, the Belle bronze statue in Amsterdam will be her "alma mater" forever. Lol

Just to add on my sincere advice...

Belle means Beautiful in French. Also, avoid names like Isabelle, Isabella, Annabelle, Annabel.. or any sort of such names which has a phonetic "belle" or "bell"
Oh, just realised this is a serious thread. I shall be polite and show some reverence here. At least until you-know-who comes and do you-know-what

Does it even matter to Her Royal Highness? Lol

You can prefix this thread title with Serious x 1,000,000, it will still not make a difference to a Loony Belle, who leaves a trail of destruction on whatever thread she tramples on...

I hope the authorities are planning a massive raid to all the vice massage parlours and hotels fronting for prostitution today. This would be a great gift to all the immoral hookers and pimps out there! Up yours!

Oh I can share about benefits of reading. After reading few hundred novels, they inspired me to lead an interesting life myself. I decided to seek jobs that will allow me to interact with people from around the world. After my happy experience working with Russians and Europeans, I applied for a job that had Asia portfolio followed by USA. And finally Australians. So I have worked with people from Russia, Europe, USA, Asia and Australia in my life. So special and fulfilling experience indeed.

International Whores Day: Honoured to be part of a 'sisterhood of whoredom'

The story of sex worker and one time brothel madam Julie Bates has inspired a show as part of the Vivid Sydney festival. Photo / John Appleyard

news.com.au. "Thank God there are people like me to provide a service."

Bates, who sometimes goes by the name of "Darlo Debby" - after Sydney's inner city suburb of Darlinghurst - will be grabbing her red umbrella and marking International Whores Day today.

Sex workers will gather outside a bar in Kings Cross, which was once the Nevada, a brothel that claims it had the largest bed in the Southern Hemisphere.

"I'm proud to be a sex worker," Bates says. "Every year sex workers stand tall under the scarlet arches where we take pride in who we are, our lives and work.

"But unfortunately, stigma is rife and very few sex workers can stand tall as we're still treated as second-class citizens."

The choice of the Nevada is not by random. As HIV took hold in the 1980s, it was the first brothel in Australia to take the sexual health of its workers seriously.

"Previously you'd get a shot in the bum and it would be okay, but this virus would kill you," said Bates.

"The Nevada was the first place to say 'any man that passes here will be expected to use a condom or he'll be shown the door'. If it's not on, it's not on."

Nevada's decision was a turning point in the Australian sex workers' rights movement.

Globally, International Whores Day is held on June 2, to recognise the anniversary of the day in 1975 when hundreds of sex workers occupied a church in the French city of Lyon.

They were protesting against the inequality of sex workers and police brutality.

Bates likens the protest to the New York Stonewall riots of 1969 that saw the gay rights movement burst into the mainstream.

"It was like the O.K. Corral for sex workers," she tells news.com.au. "It's when we said enough is enough, sex work is work and the rest of you should just get over yourselves."

These days the term "prostitute" is frowned upon by sex workers. Bates says it's a "bad, bad word with demeaning and ugly connotations for what is legitimate work".

So why revel in a term as strong as "whore"?

Decriminalisation took the police out of the sex work industry and put regulation into the hands of local councils.

Last year, a parliamentary review of the industry in NSW recommended no major changes resisting calls for extra regulation to be introduced.

A constant bugbear in NSW is the number of illegal brothels, often disguised as massage parlours, despite it being perfectly legal to set up a brothel.

Bates sees this as less of an issue with the industry and more of puritanical councils refusing development applications for brothels and forcing sex work underground.

"Councils put huge hurdles in the way of brothels. Their natural habitat is on small shopping strips, usually upstairs, where workers and clients prefer to be.

"But if you want approval you usually have to be on an industrial estate.

"The absurdity of female workers sent to the boondocks and left there like sitting ducks when everyone goes home... How safe is that? It's dangerous, it's ridiculous," she says.

Bates wants to see a "uniform approach" to sex work globally and in Australia.

This week a parliamentary committee in South Australia recommended a bill to decriminalise sex work in the state should continue unamended to a vote. Sex workers in the state can cop jail time and fines of up to $2500.

"We need to protect and uphold the human rights of sex workers who are supporting their families, making a living and putting a smile on people faces," Bates says.

"There are no bad whores, just bad laws."
