(FUCKING FUNNY) ICT: we are a bunch of fat, middle-aged men reluctantly cosplaying as a platoon.

My parade square is a Pokemon stop.

This sentence sums up everything you need to know about my half-arsed reservist in-camp training (ICT). It is also very apt because, like Pokemon Go, reservist is a meaningless waste of time that most people stopped caring about three years ago.

It is not an exaggeration or an example of my colourful humour. This is the hard truth about my most recent call back. Literally no one in my camp can summon two fucks to give about ICT.

The same applies for the commanders, the men and everybody in-between. The signals sergeant has forgotten how to turn on his radio, and my platoon commander collapsed after 17 push-ups. When you look into their eyes, you can see the distant, glassy look of men who are either somewhere far away or totally dead inside.

They are living in the separate dimension of ‘anywhere-but-here’.

As for most of my bunkmates, the number of fucks given approaches negative infinity. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) can call back our bodies, but they will never take our minds. Like extras from The Walking Dead, we sort of just loiter around until someone shepherds us to another spot where we can continue our rotting in peace.

This job usually falls on my platoon sergeant, the only person who shows signs of life inside his skull. We would totally hate him for making us do things that we have zero interest in, but we are mostly just annoyed because actual hating requires energy that we do not have.

The end result? We are not a platoon. We are not anyone’s mental image of a platoon. At the very best, we are a bunch of fat, middle-aged men reluctantly cosplaying as a platoon.

The article is hilarious. However if what the writer says is true then MINDEF is guilty of publishing fake news.

Shan should be informed so he can take action against MINDEF staff writers.

1 July may be just another day to you, but to the Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) all around Singapore, it is a day when they are reminded of the reason why they are part of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) - to safeguard the nation's sovereignty and our way of life.

This morning, more than 700 NSmen from 186 companies and their employers reaffirmed their commitment to the defence of Singapore at the SAF Day combined rededication ceremonies held at four different locations across the island.

Representing the East, CBD/South, North/Northeast and West zones, the combined rededication ceremonies were held at Temasek Polytechnic, HDB Hub, Orchid Country Club and SAFRA Mount Faber respectively.

Officiating at the Temasek Polytechnic auditorium, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean paid tribute to the NSmen for their service and commitment towards the SAF, and expressed his appreciation towards the families and employers of the NSmen for their support and encouragement.

"How strong the SAF is depends on the calibre, attitude, sense of commitment and fighting spirit of each and every one of you, whether you serve in the Army, Navy or Air Force, whether you are regulars or national servicemen," said Mr Teo.

In his speech, Mr Teo also paid tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, our first Defence Minister - the man whose ideas and foresight laid a solid foundation for the SAF.

Touching on the lasting legacy of the late Dr Goh, he said, "The ability to make tough decisions and fighting spirit were some of the attributes that Dr Goh demanded from the men and women of the SAF. These qualities are as critical and relevant in today’s complex and uncertain security landscape."

Pledge Leader for the East Zone ceremony Senior Lieutenant Colonel (SLTC) (VOL) Jeffrey Seah, Deputy Commander, 3rd Division Support Command, felt that the SAF Day is a time when "we can don on the uniform and be proud that we can wear it to our workplace and be amongst our friends and colleagues".

"After all, the SAF is all about camaraderie and esprit de corp among not only the men, but society as well," explained SLTC Seah, who is the Director of Security Industry Institute at Temasek Polytechnic.

Private (PTE) (NS) Mohd Zishan, who was at a combined rededication ceremony for the first time, felt that it was a good way to "lift up the spirit of the SAF".

Looking back on his NS days, the 28-year-old said, "The SAF is quite interesting and we go through challenging activities and tough jungle trainings... I'm proud to be part of the SAF."

PTE (NS) Mohd Zishan reaffirming his allegiance and commitment to the defence of Singapore.

"The SAF has also equipped me with the knowledge on how to defend Singapore," added PTE Zishan, who hails from 696th Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment. The other three rededication ceremonies were officiated by Minister (Prime Minister's Office) Lim Swee Say, Minister for Community, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, and Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang.Later this evening, President S R Nathan will officiate at the SAF Day Parade, held at the SAFTI Military Institute. Mr Teo, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister of State for Defence Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee and Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Neo Kian Hong, will also be present at the parade.

The old farts in this forum is way older than that. They are in the adult diaper era.
The old farts here are lucky enough to have reached old age. Too much criticism from you and you may never become one.

I know that the majority of male Singaporeans detest military service and sees it as a disruption to life, but I am one of the lucky few who look back to my NS days and confidently say that I actually enjoyed my time in NS. Play soldier, duty-free beer, lots of parties (my mates call them "functions"), roam around town with mates, training was actually fun too. We played mostly. Don't want to go back to relive those days, but its was fun.

Cheers!

If the Sg gahmen accepts a non-citizen to serve, and Mindef agrees to a monthly salary for my upkeep, I will gladly redo my previous vocation for NS. Army food isn't as bad as many blokes make it out to be, I do not mind eatlng at the muslim cookhouse in 5 SIR. Their beef rendang better than Indonesian restaugrant in Tnaglin Shopping Centre (Tambuah Mas?).

Cheers!

Sure it was fun...the beef rendang part I agree, I ate mostly at the Muslim Cookhouse, but to compare with Tambuah Mas; that is a little far fetch. Is Tambuah Mas still have a branch at Shaw Centre?...have not been to Tambuah Mas at Tanglin Shopping Centre for a long time; their gado gado I like too.

You must be paid to spread such fake news about, how enjoyable N.S. was..bearable I agree..enjoyable, NO!. & the continual irritation after NS into reservist...that is worse disruption one can really can't bear. One have to put up with frequent reporting to camp, just to check you, IPPT, other misc training, in-camp training, & the alert...having to report back ti camp on a SAT NIGHT within certain hours, for I was "privileged" to be in some HQ Advance group. The reporting unit is in some god-forsaken corner of Singapore, where back then there were no MRT Lines yet...the taxi fares cost $50 after midnight charges...& MINDEF...don't reimburse...for I 'volunteered' to pay.

Furthermore...my boss face has a 'lovely glow" when I submit SAF 100 for in-camp....30 days in Singapore...that was bad enough, if to a overseas, 'holiday' destination...that ' glow looked even lovelier'...until I found a way to 'weasel' out of reservist training.

Enjoy...you must me a masochist!...or a 'flute blower'...to sing such praises, on how enjoyable N.S. was.

Your current existence must be rather mundane and meaningless, for you to want to redo your NS.
