This is one special dish. Initially I thought it was only in my household but later found some of my childhood neighbours can cook the same thing. No even sure if its from a particular dialect group but clearly Malaysian / Singapore Chinese. This and Fish Head curry dish from the now closed Chinese shop in Race Course Road were good stuff.

Try the Katong Laksa at Queensway Shopping Centre ground floor. There is the original and pretender. The one I am referring to has almost circular seating around the store. The thick sambal they provide with the curry chicken is fabulous.
As for fish head curry, have you tried Kam Long in JB (very close to customs opposite the mall)?

Bro, what happened. How can you not have tasted the Chinese style chicken curry? Even my Indians friends found it great with french loaf.
I've eaten curry cooked with pandan leaves and curry leaves but haven't tried any curry cooked without curry leaves.
