The iPhone is only guaranteed to last for one YEAR, Apple admits in bombshell court documents
Do you remember the good old days were the appliances and gadgets you bought were meant to last a lifetime?

APPLE has revealed that its iPhones are only guaranteed to last for one year.

The tech giant said its warranty only covers iPhones for 12 months of use, meaning that anyone whose device fails outside this window will have to stump up repair costs unless they have paid for an extended warranty.

Smug Samsung, Motorola, HTC and OnePlus fans will be pleased to hear the news about Apple's short life expectancy
Apple prides itself on quality, design and value for money.

But it turns out the exact guaranteed life expectancy of an iPhone is a lot shorter than you'd hope - especially if you're planning on forking out £1,149 for its top range iPhone X.

Apple says that it is only responsible for ensuring the phones last just one year - the default warranty you get upon purchase.

The details were revealed thanks to a class action lawsuit that was launched after several iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones began suffering from "touch disease".

Touchscreens on tens of thousands of the phones stopped working - and three law firms have taken Apple to court over it.

Publically, Apple has often said that its phones are the "most durable".

Many people fork out far more than the market average for a smartphone to buy one on the basis that it is one of the highest quality phones.

Our microwaves and fridges seem to last forever - so why not our phones?
Putting an expiry date on a product is called "planned obsolescence": a profit trick where manufacturers plan or design an item that has an artificially limited shelf life, so it will become obsolete and need to be bought again.

Apple brings out a new smartphone every year.

In comparison, people who purcahse appliances like hoovers, microwaves and fridges tend to buy just one item every few years.

Even Greg Joswiak. vice president of iPhone marketing, recently told Buzzfeed that the iPhone was the "most durable" around.

But in court, Apple's lawyers have argued that it is only responsible for keeping iPhones working for a year.

In a motion that was filed in April, it wrote: "Apple's Limited Warranty expressly provides for a return if the consumer does not agree to 'the terms of the warranty.'"

Apple AR glasses: News and rumors about ‘Project Mirrorshades’

Ever wonder about the expected life cycle of your electronics? If, for example, you have an Apple iPhone and no way to change the battery without going to a repair shop, how long is it expected to last? This week, Apple provided insight on product class lifecycles in an answer on its website on a page dedicated to environmental issues and questions, first reported in The Telegraph. The quick answer? iPhones and Apple Watches are expected to last for three years.

Apple bases its lifespan expectancy on modeled use and actual use data. The Cupertino, California company groups its products by operating system in making lifespan projections, regardless of other product specifications. For example, iOS and watchOS devices have three years before Apple figures they’re used up (or lost). OS X and tvOS units are assumed to last four years. In all cases, Apple is estimating first owner device lifespans. Therefore, if you buy a used Apple device, the clock has already been ticking. A functioning iPhone 5, for example, which launched in September 2012, could be considered a living dead phone.

The information about life cycles came about in answer to a question about Apple’s Product Greenhouse Gas Life Cycle Assessment. Apple broke down its environmental impact measurement into five sections: part by part measurements; power use scenarios; transportation costs; material composition; and emissions data. The lifespan information came from the power use scenario estimates.

It’s interesting to project replacement costs based on your own devices. My wife and I, for example, both bought iPhone 5Cs in December 2013. Mine lasted until May 2014, at which point it stopped knowing how to do math, which threw off the time, dates, and just about everything else. So if I got less than a year, wouldn’t it be nice if that tacked two more years on my wife’s phone? Even though averages are based on the concept of “big numbers,” you can’t use them that way in your own household. Too bad.

Apple has said that it expects so-called first owners of £500 iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches to replace them after only three years of use, and Mac computers only four.

As part of the company’s new environmental push, which includes its new Apps for Earth campaign with the WWF, Apple has listed how long it expects its products to last for their “first owners” and therefore how much they contribute to the greenhouse gas lifecycle.

Within a new question and answer section Apple said: “Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for OS X and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.”

That assessment doesn’t take into account the recycling of devices, their reconditioning and their resale, of course, but when you buy a new iPhone 6S for £539, Apple expects it to last three years, something many suspected. Apple has been accused of intentionally slowing down iPhones every time a new one is released, although there is little evidence to support the theory.

Until recently the company only provided software support for an iPhone or iPad for around three years, typically providing two major iOS version updates from the moment they were released. The launch of iOS 8 and then iOS 9, which still supports the iPhone 4S released in October 2011, changed that.

Mac computers, however, have much longer software support lives. The latest version of Apple’s computer software OS X 10.11 El Capitan still supports computers from 2007, despite Apple expecting Mac computers to last four years.

Apple also slipped up, indicating that it could rebrand its computer operating system OS X as MacOS. The clause talking about the life expectancy of Apple computers originally said it was “assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices”, but was later changed back into line with current branding to “assumed to be four years for OS X and tvOS devices”.

The MacOS brand ceased to be used after version 9.2 in 2001, replaced by OS X 10.0 Cheetah later that year. Whether the slip up and correction indicates that Apple will switch back to its MacOS branding is unknown. The company could be running into issues with its naming, as OS X – pronounced OS 10 – is currently at version 10.11. Will it continue to use decimal places to describe its new OS versions, or will it revert back to MacOS and release an eleventh version? And will anyone care what it’s called beyond technology enthusiasts?

The warranties of a product have nothing to do with the actual durability and reliability.

My Toyota came with a 3 year warranty. Nothing has gone wrong and it's more than 6 years old.

On the other hand my neighour's Mitsubishi came with a 5 year warranty and he has made full use of it over the last couple of years and his car is not even 4 year's old.

my uncle say some people are more concern about the life expectancy and warranty of their hp and laptop that they bought extended warranty but not willing to buy insurance for their health. He say these people value their gadget more than themselves.
