Mugabe agrees to stand down as Zimbabwe president: source

2 MIN READ

HARARE (Reuters) - Robert Mugabe agreed on Sunday to resign as Zimbabwe’s president hours after the ruling ZANU-PF party fired him as its leader after 37 years in charge, a source familiar with the negotiations said.

ZANU-PF had given the 93-year-old less than 24 hours to quit as head of state or face impeachment, an attempt to secure a peaceful end to his tenure after a de facto coup.

The source said the Zimbabwe military was working on a resignation statement by Mugabe, without giving details.

Zimbabwe’s state broadcaster ZBC said Mugabe would address the nation shortly. Earlier on Sunday, the official Herald newspaper showed pictures of him meeting top generals at his State House offices, and a ZBC source said an outside-broadcast truck was being sent in preparation for an announcement.

Mugabe, the only leader the southern African nation has known since independence from Britain in 1980, was replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa, the deputy he sacked this month in a move that triggered the mid-week intervention by the army.

In scenes unthinkable just a week ago, the announcement drew cheers from the 200 delegates packed into ZANU-PF’s Harare headquarters to seal the fate of Mugabe, whose support has crumbled in the four days since the army seized power.

Mugabe was given until noon (5.00 a.m. ET) on Monday to resign or face impeachment, an ignominious end to the career of the “Grand Old Man” of African politics who was once feted across the continent as an anti-colonial liberation hero.

Its not a done deal yet as he defied the demand for stepping down in his speech:

The 93-year-old President’s address was given surrounded by military commanders who had placed him and his wife, Grace, under house arrest following a coup which began last Tuesday. Mr Mugabe stumbled over his words, mixed up the pages and apologised for re-reading some of the passages. At the end he appeared to say to an aide “that was a long speech”. The farcical nature of what has unfolded led to questions on social media about whether what he actually said was “that was the wrong speech”.

What he did say, however, led to furious reaction from his critics. The head of the organisation of veterans who fought against white rule accused Mr Mugabe of being “deaf and blind” to the will of the people. Christopher Mutsvangwa had warned earlier today of the risk of violence if the President did not step down: ”We would expect that Mugabe would not have the prospect of the military shooting at people trying to defend him, the choice is really his, he cannot avoid it.”

It seems that Grace Mugabe & Ho Ching share something. They both married into power & decided to run things into the ground.

Here I thought that the Lee's are suppose to be exceptional. Is Spore really any better off than people in Zimbabwe?

Spore might have a better start but if you look at the state of the country today & the problems Spore will face in the future, can we claim to be better off?

These sort of dynamics are seen littered through out world history. An unelected spouse or family members or lover starts to wield state power and the country becomes increasingly paralysed.

That is what the younger Lee siblings have been implying. When they both spilled their issues to the public, Aunty Ho's name was dragged from the word go.

Looks like the old codger still is lucid and taking on the military. These guys have also no brains. They should take him and his wife out of his comfort zone and into a 1 bedroom house in the burbs and state negotiating instead of in his palatial Blue Roof. They still can claim that he is safe and it was done to ensure his security.

Anyway it better to prosecute the wife as it leaves a bitter taste to let her slither away.

So the obvious question is how and why is she allowed to by the rest - silence is complicity.

The usual self-interests and preservation before national interest is pervasive in that case (no illusions).

Also there is also the preservation of family interests at all costs which you have alluded to previously.

Complicity all around and the cycle just cannot be broken, but the country and society can.

Grim.

History also shows the paralysis in the people is commonplace. Their focus is on the spouse and how to handle the spouse which is a lost cause from the very start. Look at bitterness towards Aunty Ho and Grace Mugabe, and there are not a single complimentary comments for both even from the supporters of their husbands. Its the same with Najib and Rosmah.

The focus is not to handle the spouse but the elected member who cannot control the spouse. Just remove him and the spouse is gone. The Zimbabweans have revered Robert and just can't seem to remove the abscess without taking him out. So it continues.

Look at our cabinet. When Khaw mentioned talking to Lim Boon Heng to remove the SMRT Chairman, it spoke volumes about the cabinet's lack of control and influence.

So the obvious question is how and why is she allowed to by the rest - silence is complicity.

The Mugabes was reported in the Straits Times to have spent a lot of moneys in Singapore on shopping and medical services. Should not the people who received moneys from them lodge a suspicious transaction report under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act, Chapter 65A ?

Mugabe would have had diplomatic immunity at the time. There may be a chance to lay charges now that he has stepped down.

It is the Singapore companies and individuals who are obliged to report. Otherwise it is an offence. That is what happened a lawyer called Kang recently.
