Controlled prices. Anywhere as long as authorised dealer.

My uncle used to have watch stores in Singapore. When I was a teenager, I used to help him on Sunday afternoons or when one of his employees phoned in sick. He told me that if the customer bargains (negotiates), we will sell it as long as we make $5 or $10 above the cost of the SEIKO (or whatever brand, except the luxury Swiss) watches.

My experience is that Tokyo might actually be one of the most expensive places to get a Seiko watch. It has got to do with their tax structure and export subsidies. In the past many Japanese would actually go on shopping sprees for Japanese goods in places like London and New York where there goods are cheaper.

That is correct in the 1970's, where Japanese tourists indicated that SEIKO watches are cheaper in SG than Japan.

I bought my Seiko in the 80's for $180. It was still running after 20+ years  I think it still runs except that I need to replace the battery.
The only thing you need to replace other than the battery every 5 years is the rubber gasket, which keeps it water proof. It's a great watch & in a year it will only be off by under 1 minute.

The reason I stopped wearing the watch was because the metal wrist band broke after 20 years, & not the watch:smile:
Nowadays I don't even wear a watch because because the handphone I carry has a digital clock..

My wife and I each bought a SEIKO watch (similar model, but man's size and ladies' size, round and very slim or thin) in SG in or around 1995, and both are still working accurately and efficiently. Have to replace the battery every few years.

Seiko actually puts many renowned Swiss manufacture to shame in terms of quality control and precision. Grand Seiko watches, for instance, are regulated to a tighter standard than Swiss COSC chronometers, and are more finely finished than Rolex, IWC or Panerai.

And Seiko is one of the very few—if not the only—manufacturers that make every single component in-house, including screws, dials, hands, markers and straps. Even Rolex and Patek Philippe can't make the same claim.

The only drawback is that Seiko designs are generally very conservative, and are by and large copies of classic Swiss—mainly Rolex—designs.

But the Spring Drive marked the advent of a truly revolutionary epoch in watch manufacture and timekeeping, and it rightly stunned the horological world at the 2005 BaselWorld. This was followed up last year by the launch of the Spring Drive minute repeater at the same fair to much acclaim.

The Spring Drive is only available from Thong Sia, I believe.
