Interesting places around Shanghai ... anybody ?

For those who are familiar with Shanghai, what are the interesting places that you would recommend ?

I'm going to spend a few days in Pudong, but thinking of exploring beyond Shanghai.

Been to Shanghai a couple of times, but only to the convention centre, supplier's office, and the closest pub to the hotel. WTF, Shanghai is just a big city, concrete jungle. I would like to visit Hainan Island.

I'm going to spend a few days in Pudong, but thinking of exploring beyond Shanghai.

Last trip was about 3 years ago. Is this under Ah Gong account or personal account? If under Ah Gong account, I recommend Ritz Carlton at Nanjing Road. Hard Rock and a few hi-so joints are around that area. All within walking distance. The rest of Shanghai I don't know.

According to Google Maps, there are about 10 McDonald's restaurants in Shanghai.

Nanjing Road is a pedestrian shopping street - must go. You start from Raffles City which is next to People's Square and walk east in the direction of the Bund. Take the Bund at night for the lights. Better still take a ferry from Puxi (I believe it is close to 城隍庙, another interesting tourist spot - suggest later afternoon to tie in with the ferry) to Pudong, ferry point is near the Pearl Oriental Tower. You should make the boat trip at night and then go up the tower. This cruise is definitely better than the one on the River Seine, the Thames and the canals in Amsterdam. I reserve my judgment comparing it with Venice. If you have more time, you should visit a water village (周庄), just outside Shanghai (half a day should be enough). Nearby, there is also a place fashioned after the mansion depicted in the Dream of the Red Chamber. If you have a day, you can visit Suzhou which is like Malacca to Singapore distance. If you have even move time to burn visit 新天地 (a place like Clarke's Quay) or the Century Park in Pudong and World Expo site there. I believe the China Pavilion is still standing.

It's Ah Gong account. But I'm thinking of venturing beyond Shanghai via metro or train. Shanghai itself doesn't really interest me. I bought two winter jackets the last time at the famous street outside Peace Hotel. Would like to go Beijing, but it's too long a trip even via bullet train.

OK, Suzhou comes to my mind. I never been to Suzhou so not able to provide advice on this. Only know about Suzhou because brother-in-law is working there.

OK, Suzhou comes to my mind. I never been to Suzhou so not able to provide advice on this. Only know about Suzhou because brother-in-law is working there.

Visit the 'remains' of our Suzhou Industrial Park ?

I can think of Suzhou which is north of Shanghai, and Hangzhou, which is south of Shanghai.

Have you tried Xin Tien Di? Trendy place for yuppies. But oldies oso can go lah.

Peace Hotel is within 100m of the Bund and 200m from Nanjing Road pedestrian walking mall. If you like old music, you can buy a drink and listen to the Old Men band.

There is a 南翔小笼 in 城隍庙. Are you referring to that one?

If you in Pudong, ask the locals for a steamed bun made of egg white only, like eating steamed foam melts in your mouth. The fashion is see Pusi Waitan from Pudon Hyatt. Stay at Asscort, go the TongFang Mingchu easy.

The is also a OLD store, that sells Pig trotters noodles (TiPang Mian), the Pudong locals should know of this old famous stall. They start steaming the trotters at night until next morning, but sell out fast.

Do not buy any food from roadside stalls.

REMEMBER TO HAVE YOUR HAP A&B JABS BEFORE YOU GO.

Depending on how much R&R time you got. You also can take train to BeiTaiHe, a lousy beach full of resorts where all the old commie civil servants go. Driving on highway, 7 to 8 hours at 120mph, one way.

Or go Hangzhou. I copied the below in quote. Last tum I go by vehicle. There is a small town like venice with all the waterways, very much a tourist spot. Food speciality in the town is a fucking big meat dumpling.

Shanghai got nothing except shopping. Call chicken also expensive. If you go Nanjing PuXingJie, its a fucking fucking long stretch of shops. It took me 45mins normal walking speed with no browsing from one end to the other.

If you go to Pusi in the evening from Pudong, traffic jam, all bridges.
