In my early years I followed a regime of only eating fish and vegetables similar to Steve Jobs. I felt so much better, could do all activities with a clear mind and physical prowess. Nothing to do with animal rights or religion. At that time a number of people were following the diet and it was quite popular in the 80s. Then some who had followed the diet began knocking off early. The has never been a scientific research along these lines that I know of. What I however did notice is that those amongst us, family members, friends, neighbours, colleagues who went on to enjoy longevity had one common trait - will eat anything but in moderation. They however avoided some obviously bad food food such as mutton soup, leap chap etc.

I personally know this lady who was quite religious about her fish and vegetables and she died of cancer in her 40s. And she was not even Cantonese. Then Steve Jobs.

I switched to a normal meals without any excesses not for any other reason but to enjoy good food. I did however note that when I was on fish and vegetable diet, hard-on was Grade A and maximum duration. When back a few times, it was the same after about 4 weeks. Any scientists, pundits, and any man on the street care to throw in your views.

bro,

you planning to win the Ig-Nobel prize for Biology in 2012?

this year's Biology prize went to some bright sparks looking at beetles humping at bottles :p:p:p

Mercury is the elixir of immortality. Don't believe me, you can ask Ying Zheng. :D

The infamous scrooballs actually needs to ask forummers here for advice? I would have thought he knew the answer already and this thread is just a test.

Perhaps it's used to mock some other forummer?

No lah. When Jobs got cancer in 2004, people who were aware of his diet was taken aback including me. Now that he passed away, and apparently stuck to it, is a concern.

Bro, in the old days anything goes. But it sure was an elixir for your ladies who want To be widows real quick. Except they gave it to their hubbies.

You could empty your thermometer into your wife's tuna fish. She wouldn't be any the wiser. :D

Hi Scroobal:

My own observations tell me that cancer can hit anybody. We all try to live a lifestyle we believe is healthy within our own constraints, but at the end of the road, who really knows? My aunt, a vegetarian (religious reasons) recently kena cancer of the stomach.

Neither you nor me could be as fit as Bruce Lee, but he died suddenly, with a perfect body. My cousin is almost sixty, been eating fatty foods, hard liquor, smokes. Still doing it. Wonder when the cops are going to bust him for drink driving as he still parties almost nightly.

Your last paragraph makes sense - enjoy good food. For me, I'll say I succumb to temptation no matter how I try to moderate my intake.

We live by our conscience. Be happy.

Cheers!

Job requirements.

He was made for it. I would not be able to handle it.

Cheers!

Bro, I generally agree with you that it can hit anybody. But I noticed that us Chinese are particularly prone and the Cantonese have higher incidence. I seldom hear Indians and Malays unless they smoke or chew tobacco and it is reflected in the MOH statistics. Some genes are predisposed to it but somehow I get the impression that diet plays a part. I am pretty certain that those who eat a range of stuff in moderation tend to eat longer. The Japanese have one of the highest longevity rates in the world and they have high amount of fish in their diet but they also eat meat. The Australians have a similar rate but other than meat, not sure if they have a regular diet. Their men however have a higher rate of prostrate cancer. The great unknown I suppose. In the meantime, it's Laksa, mee goreng, chicken rice, bak ku the and lots of tengirri.

That's the part that I don't get.

That baffles me too. However like I said earlier, cancer can hit anybody - we've all heard about those who don't smoke, and yet get lung cancer. As far as I understand, cell division (mitosis) is how our body grows or replace damaged cells, and if the cell division doesn't come out right, we get a mutant cell. If the mutant cell further goes replication and multiplies - there is your cancer. And sometimes when we try to interfere, this cell becomes aggressive and starts to multiply even faster - to protect its own kind. Now, I am not a doctor, so this are just some things I have read.

Some years ago, I was at a ginseng farm and a farmer there told me that cancer is the revenge of animals - I believe that alot, although now I know that explanation is not complete. We are mortals. Most of us working class I am sure vegetarianism has crossed out minds more than once.

Cheers!

Yes, Japs (especially Okinawans) generally have a longer lifespan. From this, it is quite logical to deduce that a diet in seafood might be behind longevity. But this is only one aspect. Communal support, community partipation, social support and involvement (which is more prevalent in Okinawan and communal societues) also provides the human being with a sense of belonging and sense of being a part of being something bigger than oneself. How do we measure these things?

My Ah Kong said to me long ago - your generation is concerned with prestige and status - and the stresses that come with that. These probably contribute to cancer, heart, and mental illnesses just as much as processed and quick-fix meals (food-court diets).

I don't go so much by the genetic explanation but am inclined to believe more in environmental (includes social) factors in our day-to-day living. In this, city-living is very unnatural.

Cheers!
