Why Seagate's warranty withdraw from 5yrs to 3 yrs for long time, and they are unable to make 3TB yet. WDC is 5 yrs warranty for black series and they have 3TB HDDs.

I see WDC become more popular and reliable over Seagate.

WDC is making interesting external drives, SSD etc.

Hitachi & Samsung are lagging behind.

sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda

Any Linux users with high performance SSD? Can kindly post your speed test figures using above command pse? Thanks:):)

please buy japanese if you want reliability, and if you want capacity, go for seagate then.

seagate is closing shop here soon probably in less than 6 mths fr now.

Wrong! Seagate lost to WDC in capacity! WDC got 3TB Seagate only at 2TB now.

ok, i am now more interested in 2.5 inch HDD, i never bought 3.5 inch for donkey years now.

my archive on 2.5inch HDD seagate goflex 1.5TB, my PC all uses SSD 2.5 inch.

i have experience with WD HDD problem, their expensive high performance raptor hdd, pre ssd period die in less than 3 years, after that, i never interested in WD.
I will advise japanese hdd only. Or last option seagate. nothing else.

Maybe apart from those very high data user, it it not easy to fill up a 3TB drive. most likely it will fail even before the capacity is reached. Another problem is also the accessing time will be very slow when the drive is at 50 to 60% filled.

HD video downloads, can really fill up 3TB fast.

I also backup my 5D mark 2 photo in raw form and HD video from 5D2 are huge.

Never encounter problem of accessing time when drive is 50 to 60%.
I have SSD. For archive that is not a problem.

Do you use Linux? Can show me some SSD performance figures from the test commands below? Thanks!:)

no i do not use linux. I uses win 7 pro and os X 10.7. Linux is a joke. It is for people who cannot afford a decent OS.

i got original win7, vista and xp, but i only use linux...

dun be ridiculous, why would i run linux on my high end computer? people only run linux on grandfather computer.

According to the news, both Seagate and WD have hard disk factories in Thailand. However, Seagate factories were located on lowlands and therefore suffered more damages from the floods. WD factories were located on higher land, so there was lesser flood damage.

Seagate is slashing warranty because the first batch of disks produced after the flood are bound to be unreliable with high failure rates due to contamination and faulty machines etc. It's just an indirect method of slashing costs by cutting back on after-sales support.

Nothing personal, it's business as usual.

not a fan of linux... but i must say certain acadamic software are free in linux, but not in windows.

me actually not a fan of any OS... i use linux just because it is simple, light and i don't really need any proprietary software.. i bought ms office just in case i need things like excel, but so far gnumeric in linux is already good enough.. different people got different needs and thus different preferences.. :)

i don't like Seagate HDD, very noisy, always give zap zap noise when reading data. WDC and Hitachi better. i only spoil 1 HDD ever - Seagate.
