Why do many Filipinos claim to be Spanish?

In 1849, the Spanish colonial govt assigned Spanish surnames to all Filipinos for taxation and admin purposes. Therefore, a family name like Fernandez or Martinez indicates historical imposition rather than any Spanish heritage. More than 90% of Filipinos ended up with Spanish surnames, leading many of them to claim that they are descendants of Europeans, even though they were simply assigned by the colonial administrators. In fact, many present day Filipinos identify themselves as having Spanish blood even though only around 3% do have a European ancestor.

Actress Shay Mitchell is of Filipino, Scottish and Irish descent. Her mother was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Canada, while her father is of Scottish/Irish heritage. She was once lambasted by Filipinos and other Asians for claiming that she is 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Spanish when her mother is a Filipino. Instead of recognising her Asian ancestry, she seems to have some internalised racism towards non-White races or countries and wants to claim the "sophistication" that a European country like Ireland, Scotland and Spain has.

It's like a malay guy having Chinese gf. Higher status.
That is 100% true of SPGs in S'pore who have Caucasian boyfriends or husbands. Many even choose to retain their European surnames long after being divorced because it sounds more "sophisticated" than a Tan, Lim, Chan or Wong.

Same like some Taiwanese who claim have Japanese blood

Or so.stupid Chinese like LKY who claim to be nonya ...have malay blood

Shay Mitchell denies being part Filipina even though one look at her will tell us that she doesn't look European

Nyonya no Malay blood . But they follow malay custom as they live in malay community.
I have a Peranakan classmate in JC whose father is Chinese Malaysian and mother is an Iban from Sarawak. The family is Roman Catholic, and became S'porean citizens eventually. However, as you pointed out, many Peranakans have no Malay blood, and are mostly Christians.

Peranakan are not mostly Christians either. The peranakan guy married Iban who are most likely Catholic, hence he converted.

A significant portion of the Peranakan community in S'pore are Christians i.e. Protestants and Roman Catholics. This large demographic shift largely began during the colonial period when many Peranakans attended missionary schools like ACS, SJI, St Andrew's, St Patrick's, St Gabriel's etc.

Many Indians claim to be Eurasians or Anglo-Indians because of an intermarriage between a British, Portuguese or Dutch colonist and an Indian ancestor during European colonialism. In spite of looking 100% Indian, the present day descendants have a distinct cultural tradition and heavily Indian-accented English as their mother tongue. I heard that many such families hang the Union Jack at their home and even support the England cricket and football national teams when they play against India. In fact, some "Anglo-Indians" even yearn for the British to return to India to re-colonise the country! Absolutely shocking!

Indians tend to use the father's name as their surname rather than a hereditary family name, so Abraham Arumugam's son may end up with a name like Thomas Abraham. That is why so many Indians in S'pore and Malaysia claim to be "Eurasian".

Then Sinkies should claim to be British since we were under Colonial rule once. Maybe instead of Tan Ah Gao, can be named Ah Gao Thatcher.

We were also under Japanese rule once. So maybe it wouldn’t be too bad to call ourselves Tsuyoshi Ah Gao!

I have come across many S'porean and Malaysian Chinese girls who adopt Japanese names like Sakura, Miko, Yoko, Himari etc.

It is normal for Christian S'porean Chinese parents to give their children Biblical names of Jewish origin like Paul, David, Andrew, Aaron, Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel, Sarah, Naomi, Hannah, Miriam etc. Non-Christian Chinese in SG tend to adopt an English sounding name even when they do not have one officially.

Which we did! U dont know Harry Lee?

It’s been proven genetically there are minimal Spanish AMDk genes with Pinoys, instead the biggest ‘foreign’ genes are Hokkiens, with 50% or more Pinoys having such an ancestor. That’s why Pinoys are equally irritating like Sinkies!

If they got Teochew genes like Thai, they would have been less uncouth, and more good looking.

Just some delulu Catholic wishful-thinking.

If Sinkieland were colonized by some Catholic European country, expect something similar here.
