The idea of payment for a HDB flat being "prepaid rent" is because at the end of the 99-year lease, the flat reverts to the HDB and the land to the State. This is unlike a freehold property. This lease decay decreases the flat's value as the lease runs down like a ticking time bomb.

I am in semi-retirement with a view of transitioning to full-retirement next year, so I ease myself into my next season of life. As I have set aside enough to stop working now, the next 12 months will be a prelude to doing what I want, when I want on my own terms. That is good enough for me; so far, so good.
