Minister of Health Ong Yeok Kang believes that after the official opening of the Singapore-Johor Metro (RTS) in January 2027, travel between the two places will be more convenient and frequent, and he hopes that more Malaysians will come to Singapore to spend money by then.
"Oriental Daily" reported that Wang Yikang recently attended the 17th Malaysian Journalists Exchange Program “Fireside Talk” and made the above sharing in response to the Malaysian media asking people in his constituency about their views on the Johor Metro.
Ong Yik Hong, who is also a Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC, said that more Singaporeans will go shopping in Johor Bahru by then, and some Singaporeans have indeed planned to live in retirement in Johor Bahru.
“My constituents are very excited about this project, and when I arrived in Johor Bahru, I saw that local residents were also looking forward to this project.”
He stated that customs clearance and transportation between the two places were easier than ever and many Singaporeans would travel to Johor Bahru. He also kept in touch with the state assemblymen and members of parliament in Johor Bahru and had frequent contacts.
He gave the example of Singaporeans who would visit Johor Bahru for various activities, including visiting a dentist or doing a simple health check-up, as it was relatively inexpensive and quick to do; if surgery was required, they would still return to Singapore to benefit from subsidies and related medical protection.
“With the opening of the Xinrou Metro, travel between the two places will become more frequent. I believe life will change and hope to become better. There will be an increase in the flow of people, trade and tourist exchanges in both directions. I know that voters will go shopping and I also hope that more Malaysians will come to Singapore to buy goods.”
He pointed out that this would prompt Singaporean merchants to offer differentiated products, as it would not be possible to compete with Johor Bahru in terms of price and would have to bring different values.
“I occasionally see Malaysians coming to Singapore just because some food is not found in Johor Bahru.”
Even with only the Johor-Singapore Causeway, Singaporean businesses, particularly in the northern region, are feeling the pressure, said Wang Yikang.
“I hope that rents and operating costs can be adjusted to allow the market to adapt on its own and make merchants more competitive. But more importantly, we're going to make the store ’live’ with the neighborhood so that it's a place Malaysians are willing to come and spend. In general, this will promote more dynamic people-to-people exchanges with business activities, which will be beneficial for all in the long run.”
Ong Ye Kung also mentioned that some Singaporeans have indeed planned to retire in Johor Bahru with the opening of the Johor Metro. Johor Bahru already has a “retirement life programme” product for Singaporeans offering different retirement lifestyles.
“Some Singaporeans are already planning, and I have friends who have arranged this, but this is mainly determined by the market. It is a retirement life service, and the market will respond to the demand on its own.”
He also mentioned that, although diplomatic and economic issues were often regarded as national priorities, for each country social development, social security and social cohesion were fundamental to everything.
“Without a solid social foundation, both economic and foreign policy are difficult to implement. We must maintain good social order and give the population hope for life.”

Who the fark will go to a country to spend when their spending power instantly becomes 3 time lower siao LMAO.
Those who want to gamble, take flights, see concerts, shop for luxury brands. You need a limo from jb to sinkie for these as they wont take public transport and PaP already seized some which was actually contributing to sinkie economy.

You are talking about the 1% rich Msian who can go anywhere they want to spend but who the fark from the remaining 99% will want to come to spend money dropping 3x in value. The only exceptions are those who no choice but have to come here to work LOL.

Hence Msian commoner tourists who come here solely to shop is literally ZERO.

Sinkies not designed for commoner. Ot is the richest country per capita wise on the planet.
The tax evaders. The money launderers. As lony as they are not caught in any other powerful jurisdiction l, PAP will turn a blind eye.
That 1% makes more money than the 90% and will spend much much more.

OYK is a moron. The RTS will merely reinforce the current patterns: more M'sians will come here to work and earn SGD to bring home, more Sinkies will go to Malaysia for shopping and holidays and, increasingly, essential services (medical & dental care, groceries, haircuts, pedicures, massage).

This pattern will not change as long as Malaysia's cost of living and wages are lower, and the exchange rate favors SGD.

Why is the whole world assuming that the RTS will make it "more convenient" for travel and transportation?

The trains are projected to run only once every 5 minutes during peak hours. Is that even sufficient to handle 500,000 travellers a day?

OYK is really out of touch, his mind is occupied with constantly digging sinkies medisave account money by increasing the premium of Medishield Life and eldercare shield.
In fact, More Singaporeans will spend more money in JB when RTS in operation. More might even buy proprty and live in JB but work in Singapore.
