The longest serving political prisoner in the world.


The longest serving jail term without trial in Singapore was that of political prisoner Chia Thye Poh, who was detained for a total of 32 years.

• He was held without trial under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for 23 years in a detention camp, from October 1966 to May 1989.
• Following his release from formal imprisonment, he was subjected to an additional 9 years of severe restrictions, which included internal exile (essentially house arrest) on Sentosa Island, where he had to live in a one-room guardhouse and was barred from speaking publicly or engaging in political activities.
• All restrictions were finally lifted on November 27, 1998.

Chia, a former Member of Parliament for the opposition Barisan Sosialis party, was accused by the government of being involved in pro-communist activities aimed at formenting a revolution, an allegation he consistently denied. Amnesty International recognized him as one of the world's longest-serving "prisoners of conscience".
