Some jobs are safer from the AI revolution than others.

In a recent interview, Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called "Godfather of AI," warned that mass job displacement due to AI is already underway, especially in white-collar sectors. He emphasized that "mundane intellectual labor" is at the greatest risk, naming roles like paralegals and call center workers as especially vulnerable. According to Hinton, AI's rapid advancement means it will eventually outperform humans at nearly every task, but physical labor jobs like plumbing remain relatively safe for now.

Hinton views job loss not just as an economic issue but a psychological one, arguing that even a universal basic income won't replace the sense of purpose people derive from work. While some jobs may evolve into partnerships between humans and AI, this usually results in one person doing what previously required ten, leading to widespread layoffs. Healthcare may be an exception due to its endless demand, but for most industries, Hinton predicts massive restructuring driven by AI integration.

BEIJING, July 25 (Reuters) - China's homegrown robotics company Unitree Robotics on Friday launched a new bipedal humanoid robot at a starting price of 39,900 yuan ($5,566), a deep discount to the 2024 price of a previous model as manufacturing costs declined.
R1, weighing about 25 kilograms, uses a multimodal large language model integrating speech and image modalities, according to a post on its RedNote account.

The new model costs a fraction of G1, a popular bipedal that Unitree launched in 2024 at a starting price of 99,000 yuan. The latest R1 model is also lighter than the 35-kg G1.

WMDoll, one of China’s leading sex doll makers, is expecting a 30 percent leap in sales this year, as men unable to find partners refuse to stay celibate.

Part of the uptick in interest comes from the enhanced "user experience" - which now makes use of the latest AI tech.

Founder and CEO Liu Jiangxia told South China Morning Post: “It makes the dolls more responsive and interactive, which offers users a better experience."

WMDoll, based in based in Zhongshan, a city in southern Guangdong province, implants its dolls with its cutting edge "MetaBox" brains.

These boast an AI element which is connected to the cloud.

The dolls fire off signals to Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, which process the incoming data.

Instructions bounce back to the dolls, telling them how to move and interact.

The next-gen dolls are built from synthetic flesh stretched over a metal skeleton, weighing roughly half the weight of real humans.

It can be argued that technology is not able to tell, with absolute certainty, the best course of treatment for a patient. However, computers are definitely getting better at making sense of unstructured information. Advocates of AI in medicine are not claiming that technology will take over the role of doctors any time soon. However, it will evolve in interesting, if not always predictable, ways in medicine.

You don’t hear doctors say cure and heal the patients. They “treat” patients. Yes, AI can take over the doctors easily
