The public were not involved........ it was the PRC triads. At least the poodles learnt from this incident that dealing with PRC gangsters are very different from Sinkieland secret society members.

9 SSgt Tay testified that after the arrest of Sulaiman for promoting public gaming, he went around to the other tables to collect case exhibits. As SSgt Tay felt that his life was in danger, he took out his revolver, switched on the laser guide and pointed it towards the men and commanded them to move back. Some of them complied and the crowd became less rowdy. However, Ong continued to challenge him.

11 At this juncture, the accused, coming from his right, charged aggressively towards him and demanded in Hokkien that he release Lim. The accused then challenged him in a mixture of English and Hokkien by saying “If you have the balls have a one to one with me”. The 7 Chinese men were still in front of SSgt Tay at this time. The 200 strong crowd were mostly in front but others were scattered around him and his fellow officers. The crowd was disorderly and threw things which included stones, rocks and rubbish at the 4 officers. Their emotions were stirred up by the accused and the 7 Chinese men. These 7 Chinese males told the crowd not to be afraid of the police. Later, the accused also shouted in Hokkien “mai kia mata” which meant “don’t be afraid of the police.” After he shouted this, the crowd which had been relatively calm after SSgt Tay drew his revolver started throwing things again at him and his fellow officers.

12 At this point uniformed police officers arrived. SSgt Tay told these officers to arrest the accused and Poh Yi Ming. This was because the accused demanded that he release Lim, challenged him to a fight and instigated the crowd to be disorderly again. Likewise, Poh Yi Ming had demanded the release of Lim, instigated the crowd to be rowdy and used vulgarities towards him. Ong had left the scene and was arrested subsequently on the 29th of June, 2007. SSgt Tay was not hit by the items thrown by the crowd but he sustained injuries inflicted on him by Lim. He described the condition of the lighting at the back lane as good. After the 7 photographs were admitted (P6 to P12), SSgt Tay said that photographs in P6, P7, P8 and P12 which showed beer bottles, beer glasses, cups, cans, plastic bottles, rocks and rubbish were the items that were thrown at him and his colleagues.
