This time, it was revealed from the recent finance audit of SAA – Loh Lin Kok entertainment expenses came up to about $120,000 over 4-5 years, still unclaimed from association.<o>

Loh claimed ‘ this is none of SSC’s business’ ; that he can choose to write off & treat as coming from his own pocket. What a noble gesture if he really do so.

Loh claimed they are legitimate expenses – since he has to entertain visitors from the International Athletics fraternity.<o>

Main thing Loh stressed : Nothing significant has been found from the audit to suggest any financial wrong doing or dishonesty.<o>

This much I concede to Loh Lin Kok.<o>

Separately, in Today newspaper, Teo Ser Luck has commended Cheah Kim Teck, CEO of Jardine C & C Motor Ops Division, for his support for Spore Sports and athletics in his role as Board member of Spore Tote Board. Cheah, 57, is a former national sprinter & member of ’69 & ’75 4x400m SEAP Games Gold team.

Cheah was also a member of SSC Board before. He was first reported in TODAY on Monday as likely challenger to Loh as SAA President.<o>

My own favourite candidate for SAA President is Richard Seow 47, Parkway health chairman – a former schoolboy sprinter (1<sup>st</sup> schoolboy under 11s for 100m in 1978). He also supports Cheah’s bid to be President, commenting : ‘… very heartening to hear Lin Kok said he’s prepared to step down if a suitable candidate comes along<o>

However what interest me is that unlike football, badminton & table-tennis where with near complete ease, establishment candidates (including ministers & MPs) can be shipped in as boss. I am sure of course, they are all done constitutionally.<o>

Not for lack of challengers. Vanquished Opponents like fellow lawyer,Edmond Periera (’96,2000), Steven Lee (2006, with Kunalan in his team). <o>

The only years when he stepped aside for his own man, oil man Tang Weng Fei to be President 2004-2006. Mr Tang incidentally was reported to be on the side of the 100 plus signed petition to remove Loh from SAA submitted to MCYS in Sep 2009.<o>

I supposed constitutionally, it’s in the hands of representatives of the 21 affiliate member clubs such as Swift, Flash, SIA, SPH, Prisons, NUS, Spore Poly etc. <o>

Incidentally, when I check out the Management Committee members background, other than 1 from SPH club & a few from Athletics Officials Club, the rest 7 out of 17 members all come from Swift (Loh’s club). Not very inclusive I would say.<o>

Still, Loh must be a slick politician & campaigner. Despite snubbing advice from E W Barker, Tan Eng Liang, Ng Ser Miang to Teo Ser Luck, Teo Chee Hean & Vivian B. over the years, he is still immovable.<o>

Loh has been paying out of his pockets for the last 30 years. Thats the reason why the affliates continue to vote him in. There is no money in Athletics. Who wants to pay to watch someone sprint unless its world class.

I would however say Loh should have stepped down long time ago. No one sure have a tenure more than 3 to 5 years for anything that involves national interest. The constitution should be amended so that continous hold of such nature be removed. He can always recontest after a break of 3 to 5 years. And no one should go more than 2 terms.

Tang Weng Fei is also another joker. He brought in PRC chaps who created more trouble than anyone else. Loh aleast will yell at you for the money given.

Agree with you Scroo, that SAA Constitution should be amended to prevent unbridled continuous ruling.

U say he pay out of his own pocket all these years. But why - what's the rationale if he has to use his own dough ?

Out of love for Spore athletics, love of being President ? Worth all the public negative ctiritcism ? For fuck sake why pay to be public enemy no 2 (no 1 is Lee Bee Wah :biggrin:

It's true Sporean Athletics will never be world class !

But I was very disappointed that in the 80s - people like Haron Mundir, Md Hosni, Hamkah Afik did not live up to full promise as worthy successors to C Kunalan & gang from the 60s.

I concede they may not all be model sportsmen, but SAA leaders have failed in bringing out the best from our available talent much to the chagrin of even the late Barker who publicly asked Loh to 'examine his own House'.

Then UK Shyam - another premature washout.

James Wong has some run-in with Loh if I don't remember wrongly but to his credit, his tenacity & obstinate endurance amazes me. Perhaps discus/hammer have given him so much over the years - his education, his wife, his career & livelihood.

But my eternal pique remains, why no profit, Loh still insisted on contributing/serving out-of-his-own-pocket even ?! :eek:

The affliates are fully aware that if Loh goes, it will be taken over by a PAP MP or a Govt sponsored candidate to cover cost. I suppose its pride in some extent to be the last standing sporting club that does not want to bossed around. Look at FAS, after Ganesan left and Govt took over. Look the Table Tennis Association, the Silat Federation etc. Ganesan is another who put his own money.

From carpark, house, supermarket, pharmacy, school, shopping mall are all run by the Govt. Some respite I suppose.

I am sure if FAS soccer level improved and we had the joy of having the euphoria of the Kallang Roar after Ganesan was dumped, Loh would have been kicked out long time ago.

FAS is the best example of unabashed govt meddling - after Ganesan left/removed (supposedly becos offended Johor Sultan ?), Teo Chong Tee beome FAS boss. I remember in the stadium during Msia Cup games, everybody want to 'chong tee' (kacheow) this non-Football man ! Then Maj Abu Abbas, then Mah Bow Tan, Ho Peng Kee, Mayor Zainal Abidin. But I would LOVE to see someone from Sports Fraternity head SAA - preferably someone who has strong biz/ private sector credentials.

I dun know who this Cheah Kim Teck is - but so far so gd , maybe anybody other than Loh will do.

Bro, you know your stuff and memory very good.

Cheah is St Pat's boy who was a national sprinter. He did very well in car sales and became the boss of Cycle and Carriage and now one of those asked by govt to be part of GLC board etc. Nice guy.

Unfortunately I doubt he has the time to do anything meaningful. Ho Peng Kee is soccer mad (really mad), used to play soccer with NUS students etc. Very passionate but just no time.

I say just change the constitution, restrict tenure/term and let one sports towkay or professional run the show. Both Loh and Ganesan are lawyers.

thks, but not good memory lah, just grow up in those times.

I am not asking for much - just to witness some Sporean sprinter among top 3 in ASEAN, 4x1 & 4x4 relay team medal winners, 1 or 2 outstanding high jumper / long jump / triple jump medal winner - some successor to James Wong etc.

If one scrutinize the School Athletics scene closely, not really that bad - even the girls scene. Unfortunately, everytime some budding athletes surface, then their coaches kenna chop due to being 'not qualified' etc etc. Actually, Spore Athletics can produce its own talent for Sporeans to be proud of....

I say earlier my ideal candidate is Richard Seow, ex-ACS sprinter now Parkway Health Chairman. He oredy sits on SSC Board - so some passion is there. Maybe he too 'high class', too busy to serve as lowly SAA President.

Old time athletics soldiers like Tan Eng Yoon, C Kunalan, Maurice Nicholas, Patrick Zedner, Merican, Glory Barnabas, Prema Govindan, K Jayamani & all onetime household names - I am sure they can be persuaded to return or surface to inspire a whole new generation IF some charismatic & sincere figure dedicated enuf to lead SAA can emerge - someone transformational like Obama ....

Yeah, I am dreaming, dream on for the day where the pool & the track canbe equally productive at SEA Games or higher.... otherwise at every SEA Games, when athletics programme starts, Singapore punctured oredy !

Loh Lin Kok has staying power! He has proved it again and again. I believe Loh Lin Kok is the strong man extraordinaire in local athletics. Pause and think! Without him at the helm all these years, Singapore athletics would have been dead as a dodo. He is the one who dares to speak his mind. I also know he is squeaky clean. Blame the athletes and their coaches. Imho, Loh would make a great candidate for elected president of Singapore and not just amateur athletics. :biggrin:

He is a thorn and a threat because he is not a yes man. :wink:

Just a megalomaniac ! Did you read in ST today, besides his penchant for entertainment expense (120K), he also liked to issue cash cheques (more than 550K) & gives tips ($30-$50) in addition to service charge.

Most people that commented only read what has been reported and SPUN. Go and do some ground work and check with the majority in the SPORTING FRATERNITY in Singapore and you will see a clear and different picture of whats been SPUN by the NEWS.

Only FEW have the foresight and brains to see the SAGA for what it is.

I liken this to Potong Pasir or Hougang,

Well, Straits Times today adds to what New Paper highlighted yesterday.

More revelation from audit:-

(1) more than $550,000 in cash cheques issued
(2) excessive tipping culture (above $30)
(3) cumulative entertainment expense (totalling $120k)
(4) no competitive quote for air tickets & hotels

The respective Loh rebuttals: -

(1) unavoided during Spore marathon - runners demand cash
(2) so what - tips to reciprocate 'package deals'
(3) none of yr biz, I claim back or write off see i song or not
(4) leh-chey, where got time ?

Even ST acknowledges no reason stated why SAA should kenna audit. Loh described all this as 'making mountain out of molehill'.

So, I guess Loh is not dishonest fraudster simply treating SAA as his own fiefdom - nothing criminal at that.

Basically 2 main views of Loh Lin Kok

Camp (A)
- long serving dedicated strongman
- victim of high-handed civil servants from SSC

Camp (B)
- egoistical tyrant who outstayed his welcome & alienate athletes/coaches/parents etc despite being elected term after term
- deserving of tough treatment becos time & again, he did not comply with deadlines & meaningful workplans

I am glad from ST report, the new alternative acceptable to fraternity & authorities - Mr Cheah Kim Hock has publicly indicated interest (careful man, still doing due dilligence before declaring comfirmed candidacy for SAA president) & more importantly indicated he would like to speak to Loh Lin Kok first as they are friends.

I am all for civility & grace.

If Loh can share his grievance with Cheah & the latter get gain his understanding then the greatest winner is Spore Athletics.

But I will not compromise on my personal bottomline - Loh must go - Loh staying on is not good for SAA anymore.

In the meantime, while thinned skin lilies will scream foul play, I will watch how the powers that be slowly tightening the screws for change to be effected constitutionally.

Loh has already indicated many times that if the RIGHT candidate steps forward, he will step down quietly.

But so far, its only PORLUMPARS that cum forward and try to destroy MORE democracy lah.

See what happened to football and especially table tennis. You S'poreans proud that 2nd class PRCs won us the silver medal?

Most S'poreans actually hoped they lost the final match.
