A gambling couple allegedly threw away their grade-six son’s textbooks because “book” and “lose” sound the same in Chinese.
A netizen posted to a Facebook page named parent licenses that his mother was always trying to clean their place and threw away his younger, sixth-grade brother’s textbooks.
The netizen repeatedly asked their parents not to throw out the books and homework as the younger brother needed them to prepare for exams, but his mother said he would never use the books.
The parent also said their brother had already received his report card, so the textbooks from the previous semester were useless and eventually insisted on throwing them away.
The victim believed that their parents didn’t want the textbooks because they thought it was unlucky to have books in the home after losing money gambling, as “book” and “lose” sounded the same in Chinese.
The parents were finally made aware of their inappropriate actions when the school asked the brother to hand back original homework and last semester’s tests for grading purposes but blamed the boy for not telling the school earlier.
Many netizens sympathized with the poster and the young brother, saying, “it’s a pity to have such a father and mother.”
“They (the parents) really read few books, so they always lose,” a comment joked.
Another encouraged the netizen to study hard and move out as soon as possible.
