A teenager who has recovered from COVID-19 said she suffered "enormous pain" until all symptoms suddenly disappeared after 10 days.

In a letter to the Hankook Ilbo, sister paper of The Korea Times, the woman, 18, surnamed Kim, who lives in Daegu, explains how she contracted the coronavirus and survived it.

Kim said it started after speaking with a follower of Shincheonji, a shadowy religious sect responsible for much of the virus spread in Korea, near a subway station on Feb. 20.

The Shincheonji member tried to make conversation with Kim, who briefly responded after taking off her mask. It later turned out that the person had been infected with the virus. On March 4, Kim tested positive for COVID-19.

"I did not know it would spread that quickly," she said.

Kim started showing COVID-19 symptoms, including fever, on March 5. She had quarantined herself at home until March 9 due to a lack of beds in quarantine facilities.

Until then, she isolated herself in a room. She disinfected a shared bathroom every time she used it and regularly spoke to a health official.

"The official tried to calm me down, which was helpful," she said.

When symptoms were severe, Kim had difficulty breathing.

"Every time I breathed, it felt like my lungs were being torn apart," she said. "When I coughed, thick phlegm stuck in my throat. I also felt as if the lower part of my stomach was being squeezed and twisted. Repeatedly, the pain went away and came back, which made me exhausted … I think it can be extremely difficult for old people with preexisting conditions to endure that."

On bad days, she suffered the stomach pain for three hours.

But on March 13 ― 10 days after diagnosis ― all symptoms were suddenly gone. She was later confirmed to have fully recovered.

"I thank the medical staff who tried their best for me," Kim said. "I do not want anyone to be infected with the virus. But if someone gets infected, I hope everyone treats the patient with a warm heart."

After reading this, I better tell my daughter not to speak to all those uncles and aunties around my hdb block when she's at the playground or estate. One never knows who has the virus as the spreader doesn't show symptoms at all.

You still haven't confined your daughter to her room? You sound like a very irresponsible parent.

Your unwarranted paranoia will eventually make you do the unthinkable to your daughter, like locking her up indoors.

Why are you so nasty to me?

Why are you such a selfish person? One of my friends in Singapore just called me up seeking financial assistance because of all the baloney from the media which is then fueled by people such as yourself begging the government to make things even worse by shutting down the whole country.

He's in a desperate situation with his credit cards maxed out and he is unable to pay his bills. He has children too. You are not the only one who has precious offspring.

I don't think so. Just more cautious, better be safe than to contract a painful disease. I am more worried that I will pass to her because I meet more people when at work. I have stopped using the same utensils when we share food. Previously, a packet of charsiew rice, I will eat first then she will eat. But now, I make sure I divide it up with an unsoiled spoon before eating.

Symptoms SUDDENLY ALL GONE!!! Yeah right. It took me 6 months to recover fully from the flu but thanks to the powers of the cult their leader waved a wand and she was cured!

What's the cult equivalent of Hallelujah?

What has this got to do with me when he isn't prudent in his savings in the first place? You are simply scolding me because I give my views. That's very nasty.

Why risk her life by going to work and then returning home? Quit your job and stay home to minimise the possibility of transmission. Your daughter's life is far more important than your salary. If you lose her she's gone forever. If you lose a job you can always get another one once this blows over.

My savings should be able to sustain me for a year if I lose my job.

He's running a business which is obviously something you know nothing about. When someone starts a business, even a small one that's $200,000 up front in rent, fixtures and inventory even before you earn your very first dollar.

When myself and my partners started a business way back in 1997 we burned through $6 MILLION before we even shipped the first products.

What do you do for a living? You don't have to go into specifics. Salaried? Civil servant? stat board? Private sector?

So quit then. A year should be more than enough to ensure that your daughter is safe.

That's the risk of running a business isn't it? When times are good, you get more multiple of times of monies than a salary worker like me. Now when times are bad, if he has no savings to tide himself through, why blame others? And why you blame me for? Did I murder him? You are being unreasonable.

Why should I? As long as I can carry on I would. I just want her to grow up well.

Don't say I didn't warn you. The risk of catching the virus is high and it can be lethal. I feel sorry for your daughter for having such an irresponsible father who would risk her life just for $$$.

I would understand it if you had to work to feed your family but with a year's worth of savings it is unthinkable that you still want to carry on bringing home viruses on a daily basis.

Say what you want nasty and unreasonable man.

I've exposed you for what you are. I leave it to others to judge you based upon what you have told us. In the meantime I have friends who need help.

Koreans are tremendous suckers for Christian and Buddhist cults. Even more so than the Japs.

Although the Japs are wacky in their own way.

Do what you wish nasty and unreasonable old man.
