My guess is the kids who can study will naturally do well in school.they dont really require much input from the school or their teachers.which brings the question is so much segregation in school a good thing.studies have shown that students tend to perform better in general as a whole when theres a good mix of students.

Students tend to perform even better when good students are not mixed with the losers. That's why top schools like RI and RJC only admit the best of the best students, and not be politically correct and take in all sort of lousy students just to act "inclusive".

Thanks to our top world class schools and supported by a strong tuition industry, sinkie students have been regularly topping international exams comparing sinkie and foreign students. Our education system is very good. Sinkies are so lucky to be studying in Singapore under our system instead of some shitty education system that they have in the US, Europe or Australia. I hear that sinkies who cannot make it in Singapore try their luck in Australia to get a 2nd-rate degree.

Students who go for tuition from Preschool up to A levels may do well during those years, but in Uni , without tuition they get average grades.

Yes I have seen Spore students initially do well against Canadian students because they had prior experience from the schools in Spore. If they have done A levels it is equivalent to 1st year university. That's why you only need O levels to enter Canadian Uni .

However as they progress they soon lose out to the brighter Canadians. Make no mistake that there are smarter Canadians who can pick things up quickly.

It's a well known fact sinkie students are rote learners who are exam smart and study to ace exams. Even the tutors admit he spots exam questions for them.

why not? these private tutors earn loads more than their MOE public school counterparts. they can plan their own timetable by being their own boss. And they don't have to perform "ECA" like canteen duty, ushering, being a CCA in-charge, pedagogical planning, parent-teacher meetings, and all the bullshit that regular teachers are always complaining about.

The best is not dealing with unreasonable parents who go lodge police report on silly things. Cannot forget the mother who thought dyslexia was forgetfulness.

instead of coaching singaporeans to be businessmen, capitalists, entrepreneurs and industrialists and technopreneurs like stanford business school, instead we are spending 1 billion a year on coaching students on how to be A1 students.......

and we have a goon du minister whose proud that France has 1/5th students dropping out and 1/3rd students who repeats a year......holy fuking shit, america and france may not place that much emphasis on academic scores but their country sure as hell is 100 times more useful and productive and more intellectual than sinkies.

america has shows like shark tank, singapore have all the smart scholars and pmets who cant even create jobs let alone find a job,and phds vegetable sellers.

we should send our best and brightest vivan balakrishnan to silicon valley, clearly he will entertain us all with his brilliant ideas.PAP the most worthless government in the world, whose proud of being useless.

sinkie kids are bright, but unfortunately they are stuck in an exam-hell well and are not living in an eco-system where the best universities with the best mentors and professors arrange frequent get-together's for the best and brightest to bounce their ideas and concepts off each other and with the best and brightest industry guru's who have been there and done that but require fresh infusions of methodologies/algorithms and out-of-the-box perspectives of problem-solving (of very universally big issues of global proportions). this is how google was founded. and then it became highly profitable and capitalized as a consequence.

Sounds fair.

The best teachers make lots of money by being a tutor. Striking out on your own takes balls and tenacity.

The second-rate teachers stay in good school, holding their iron rice bowls, bitching about their heavy workload and being envious of the successful tutors.

The lousiest teachers go to neighbourhood schools and spend the rest of their teaching careers enduring the rotten kids, counting down to the days when they get an opportunity to transfer or resign after they cannot take it.

there's another center of excellence in surrey, uk. but they are still limited by the lack of critical mass, as their best and brightest flock to sillycon valley after a few years of r&d stints there. the other is austin, tx, and others are around the mit/harvard and princeton areas. they keep losing their best minds to the valley as the money, funding and supportive partners are here. follow the money and passion.

I am not sure if people are confused about these super tutors. They are not your ordinary teachers turned tutors. They have excelled academically would have done will in any field they are prepared to enter. Some are scholars. Their approach is very different from ordinary teachers. Some of them re-write the curriculum and do not follow what the schools teach or even what the text books teach. They create their own teaching notes and work from ground up so the concept and theories become strong foundations. These guys are known to push grades up to 3 levels. It usually takes about 3 years to reach that stage. I noticed that one of the is actually a high flyer in MOE. He was writing curriculum and then moved to policy and an OMS.

On the other end are schools such as Montessori, Kumon, Mindchamps etc targeted for tots and primary schools kids that have no idea what is going. These businesses will not survive handling secondary kids, because the majority of kids would have come of age and know that it adds little or no value. And they like to use the names of academics, some formulae, structured systems etc When you check the academic qualification of the trainers, the game is up. Thats why they like to engage Ang Mo housewives to reach because the parents have no idea the background of teachers because they are active English speakers.

To earn big bucks as a tutor, these are the areas in which you must excel:

(1) managing students and parents expectations as well as motivation and encouragement of students. In other words, the soft skill of getting people to do what is required to achieve success

(2) ability to handle students of all abilities from very weak to very strong

(3) structure lessons, syllabi, concepts, etc, in a manner that will enable students to have a firm grasp of the fundamentals. As Scroobal said this means writing your own materials and explaining them in your own manner. Different tutors will have different approaches. What may work for one student may not necessarily work for another.

(4) After hours service - consultations, Q&A sessions, ad hoc assistance when assignments are due, on the fly questions, exam period intensification, etc.

Other important points to note:

(1) marketing strategy. word of mouth marketing is the best. But also must be complemented by mass marketing. How do you position yourself? Method of mass marketing is also important. Do you distribute flyers? Post advertisements at strategic locations? Get your name and photo on prominent publications? Get Popular bookstore to carry your billboard? Your marketing method will determine whether parents see you as cheapskate or as someone who is a professional.

(2) Always get student and parent testimonials and this is the most prominent part of your marketing beside your academic qualifications.

(3) Location location location. Can make or break any tuition center

(4) The best tutors are those who operate out of their own homes and so have no overheads and can focus on teaching.

(5) Parents always look at your academic qualifications and how many years of experience first. If you teach JC you must have first class honours

(6) An MOE tutor will always earn at least 1.5 times a non MOE tutor even if you have 15 yrs exp versus the MOE teacher's 1 yr exp

They write curriculum but yet do not follow what the school or textbook teach. Then what do they teach?

They create their own teaching notes and work from ground up so the concept and theories become strong foundations. These guys are known to push grades up to 3 levels. I've made copies of the notes my son has from school and from tuition. Maybe I should start a tuition centre and hire some tutors. With these notes, I think I can come up with the 'John Tan' special methods for getting As for your exams.

Montessori and Kumon targets tots and primary school kids because that is their field of expertise. They don't go into the higher levels and more serious stuff of national exam preparations like PSLE, O levels and A levels.

I wouldn't trust ang mo to teach in Singapore schools. I have enough relatives and friends who studied in places like UK, US and Australia where they all unanimously concluded that those countries have set very low standards for their Math and Science. Those places still produce white students who are good in Math and Science not because of their superior teaching, but simply because of the sheer size of their populations.

The only thing ang mo can teach is English, and often to third world village kids. I have some western acquaintances who have done teaching stints in villages in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia teaching English.

If you need to ask this question you obviously haven't given a single hour of tuition in your life.

You can copy people's notes but can you get into a student's mind and way of thinking and explain it in a way he or she can understand?

Can your organize and structure information? Can you do so taking into account different syllabi across MOE, IB, IP curricula?

Can you effectively summarize key points and devise questions on the spot without referring to notes? Can you explain one entire chapter of material without looking at the book, from the ground up?
