Both me and my wife make 6 figure salaries, but we still find Sinkieland an expensive place to live and raise kids.

My youngest kid is struggling with school and is failing, my wife is now thinking of resigning from her job to teach the kids. Soon we will be a single-income family and it's gonna get tougher for me. Fortunately we are debt-free and have made some good investments and good savings to fall back on if needed.

Nowadays, $1 million is not a lot. For both me and my wife to retire now in Singapore, we probably need $3 million or more.

I have long ago concluded its not economically viable to retire in Singapore. Even if you have $3 million or more. Why pay $150,000 for a basic car, and then have to lose it every ten years? Malaysia is my retirement destination and I have already started planning that some years ago. Its a good place to stretch your money and there are many Chinese enclaves in all major cities.

"..........In 2005, when I was 21 years old in Singapore Management University, I made my first investment of $1,000 to $2,000 in Golden Agri after doing a project in school on palm oil.

Q Describe your investing strategy.

A I mostly invest in listed stocks in sectors I am familiar with. I invest in blue chips or stocks paying a stable dividend of 3 per cent to 6 per cent.

The sectors I invest in include financial services, technology, real estate and casinos.

I identify trends in these sectors and try to stay ahead of them. Also, I study a company's revenue streams, the management team, the business model and debt level.

Also, I will compute valuation multiples for a company - such as its price-to-book ratio and price-to-equity ratio - and compare these against the multiples of the sector to assess if a stock is cheap.

I intend to hold the majority of them for three to five years.

I also invest in insurance to protect myself and provide for my beneficiaries in the event of unforeseen circumstances. I buy life, health, personal accident and even endowment insurance plans.

The insurance payout will be about $2.5 million upon death, depending on how it happens.

I also hold United States Treasuries to hedge against economic downturns.

Most of my investments and my spare cash are denominated in US dollars as I believe the US dollar has room to grow. I bought most of my US dollars at an average price of $1.255.

I also invest in private companies.

I allocate maybe about 10 per cent to 20 per cent of my money for short-term investments. Sometimes, I trade daily, weekly or monthly if there are opportunities like price drops.

Q What's in your portfolio?

A Fifty per cent is in equities, 15 per cent is in bonds, 20 per cent in cash, and 15 per cent in private companies. The total value of the portfolio is now about $1.5 million.

The investments are spread evenly across companies for diversification purposes. I am invested in stocks like Google, Amazon, Tesla and Facebook.

The amount in bonds is mainly invested in 30-year zero-coupon US Treasuries. When their price goes up by a bit, I sell them and when their price drops, I buy them back.

The returns on my stock and my bond portfolio have worked out to an average of 8 per cent to 10 per cent per year since 2009. The majority of those returns came from equities, particularly when markets recovered from a crisis.

The private companies I invested in are mostly Singapore tech start-ups. I entered about one to two years ago and their revenue has since grown on a collective basis by about 10 per cent.

I spend about $11,000 a year on my personal insurance premiums. Including the premiums I pay for my family, the total is around $26,000 annually.................."

Surprise she has no property in her investment portfolio .

I can live frugally because that is how I have always lived & that is why I was able to amass my $$$. The only time I had debt was when I had a mortgage but never liked the feeling & that's why I made it a priority to pay it off.

I'm now at the age where I am feeling the aches & pains of my age. I see many people my age passing away & I don't think I have much time left, that is why I have already made my will, to ensure that the PAP gets nothing.

I can & am living off the dividend/interest from my investments. I plan to move to Thailand because of the quality of life there but will probably keep my Spore home for occasionally re-visits. When I go my beneficiaries will be multi-millionaires & hopefully have an easier life

do u think she gets her 100k job thru talent or just by looking pretty, women are so lucky,as long as they are beautiful or even half decent they get money thrown at them, doesnt matter if u want demand for gucci bags or hermes wallet.

You probably heard the saying "a fool & his money are soon parted".

I hear of many well off Sporeans, who are now struggling because they are now unemployed & squandered away their $$$.

Same thing with pretty girls. If they squander all that $$$ they aren't going to have any $ left when they are older. In fact I think beauty can be a cursed because it deludes one into thinking that life can always be so easy.

That is a terrible way to live life. U only have one live to live. what is the point of being frugal? If you do that, you do not enjoy the finer and nicer things in life. Like travelling, good food, pampering yourself. I know so many people who were frugal and saved every penny with the intention to have a good retirement, but when u are old and have limited mobility. you cannot enjoy it. Also, many I know passed away from diseases and what not. In the end, all the frugalness means nothing to them. they cannot bring the money with them.

U have to know that there is good debt and bad debts. Borrowing money for gambling and what not is a bad debt. Borrowing money for investments to make even more money is good debt. I think you fucked yourself your whole life.

I think my biggest regret was not to have emigrated. This would have greatly improved the quality of my life.

Still regret that decision, but I had family obligations :(

Just read the thread article here right now. Yeah, totally agree and positive in this case that if parents aren't rich too much then it's possible to gain 1 million at the age of 29. Without doing wrong or anything illegal.

The fact is without knowing our own lifespan, it is very difficult to plan for retirement and current spending. The fear of not enough money left for old age is always there. Endup many people left a fortune when they go. How sad.

maybe some people grew up poor and frugal all their life and its deeply ingrained in their personality even after they got rich, people can be happy being who they are u know......chuck feeney a billionaire whom i deeply admire who gave away all his money over the course of twenty years when he was still alive said he could be happy if u just gave him a grilled cheese sandwich......he knew what it was like to grow up in the great depression and was very uncomfortable with ostentatious displays of wealth and luxury.

Don't get me wrong, when I say frugal I don't mean scrimped
What I mean't was no cars, no expensive restaurants, no branded clothes, expensive girlfriend,...

When I cleared my leave, I usually went to Thailand so that the office wouldn't call me back. I did clear my leave & spent the time in Canada &'the USA when I had to go there on company business.

I also spent time time visiting Britain & Europe when I had to clear my sabbatical.
