Medical Card For Singaporean

Do not know if this is useful information for all, however I just managed to secure my Medical Card coverage of RM1.3 Million using one of the insurance company in Malaysia. Find it extremely essential for Singaporeans who are living in Malaysia. Any one under this plan as well? Maybe can share more information.

2 days ago when I visited a GP for my annual pre-CNY flu and cough.... saw one guy who fallen off from his motorbike with his wife behind. Bleeding profusely. Makes me wonder for foreigners like us to stay in private hospital in Malaysia will the medical fee be sky high?

Check out Regency Specialist Hospital (very near my house ) or Gleneagles Hospital (very far from my house :o) which can use Medisave.

But wouldn't our Singapore medical insurance be able to be used in MY as well?

I do not know about the cost of medical especially hospitalisation in Malaysia. Heard from a friend who was hospitalised under ICU, one day is RM1800. Hear liao a bit jelly leg. Thinking if my Medisave is sufficient for such an unfortunate event if one day I fall sick or fall off my bike when travellig in out. Last thing I want is to add burden to my wife if I lose my capacity to earn money so decided to bite the bullet and get a proper insurance at least.

Usable, i was able to use it to cover my childs birth in Malaysia, my wifes time in the hospital and the time i drove myself (suspect heart attack) on a new years eve day (i was working over time that night)

Also used it for coverage in clinics as some clinics in Johor are also on the panel of doctors. All coverage done from Singapore. Insurance people were pretty ok when they saw my claims in MYR.

Giving birth in hospitals like Columbia asia used to be under 3k RM but now about 4k RM if i remember. Following what i heard from friends who went there after me, it was still good but their subsequent friends started having bad experience so if i do have another child, i will probably try Gleneagles instead. Dr Tey is based there and at the Kempas medical centre too. Most private hospitals are about 4k RM now. My relative had an atv accident last time and got into A&E at a government hospital, luckily only scratches and scrapes. Total cost? Less than 80 RM all in, including the x-rays.

Definitely still more affordable than in SG but it does make sense to have coverage. Those who don't have international insurance coverage from SG should at least look at some form of insurance locally for long term. Palliative or long term chronic illnesses are still draining financially and emotionally wise so always good to have some form of coverage. Accidents wise, they are still way more reasonable than in SG. A friend of mine had an accident and was in ICU for a week, costs about 40k SGD and medisave did not cover most of it if i remember.

I believe if in SG, in Govt hospital under Class C, the subsidy is up to 95%. Out of pocket costs will be minimum after deducting medisave. Unless it's really a Big One.

Wow RM 4000 to give birth in a private hospital in JB? That's ridiculously low. My cousin paid some RM 24000 for a 2nd rated private hospital in Singapore. Heng got baby bonus which they exhausted after 1 year plus.

I think many of us are capable of handling the trivial medical fee. However the thought of staying in a foreign country where in the event anything happened I wish to know that my wife and family members will not have to worry for money prompted me to look for a sufficient insurance coverage which does not burn my pocket as well. Funny though, when staying in Singapore I never thought of such things only when now I consider myself staying aboard then I start to worry more.

If you don't mind roughing it out with the locals and go to a JB govt hospital and look at the rates on the wall, the charges for foreigners can be lower than what Spore citizens pay at own SG govt hospitals.
Just don't look at what MY govt charge their own people or you will get sicker.
You don't see many FT staff either instead the racial mix is what you find in SG hospitals of old.
From my experience there is no questioning their competency, the young doctors are well trained, many are local Chinese so comms not a problem for elderly and there is always a senior or specialist about
The wards allow one family member/caretaker to be with patient at all times.

This is what worries me. Previously when I was knocked down by a driver ignoring my right of way (green light), broke my left ankle. My medical fee turns out to around $24000 and that is C ward. But I had 7 operations in total in a year... This is still minor to me. Imagine in the case of cancer or kidney failure or heart issue. I cannot figure how I can support the medical fee financially and yet still have to battle the illness prompted me to take initiatives this time round, instead of depending on the medisave which sometimes I also do not understand cover what and does not cover what till now.

Have you been to JB Govt Hospital yourself before bro? My wife's grandmother was admitted and ya, her medical fee was RM8 due to her old age (Malaysia own form of Pioneer Generation I have to tell off the doctors when they doing their round. She was scheduled for operation to remove some kidney stones and must not have any intake of food or water. But for 3 days, the operation was delaying after delaying. The nurses have no idea what is in store, the doctors were blaming each other and high work load.... Frankly speaking, I rather pay RM400-RM600monthly to prevent myself to be in such situation.

Can't we asked to be transfer to SG Hospital and use PAP Medishield Life that is free for life ?

it also depend on how critical your condition is during the time, whether you are condition worthy to move. I thought of this as well but the thing about life is, usually things will happen in those loopholes you plan... like in the above situation, sway sway your only option is to move to singapore yet you are unable to.

What so difficult ? I see ambulance moving in and out of customs now and then .
