[Advice Required] Pomegranate Juicing Questions

Good Morning.

I bought 10 big USA pomegranates from Giant yesterday night. It's @ $2.20 a piece. I intend to make fresh pomegranate juice for us today but before I start, I have some questions, hopefully I can get good answers to maximise my time and efficiency.

1. Taking out the Red Pearls

Traditionally, the way I go about this, is to break the "husk" gently using a fruit knife and manually remove the little Red Pearls from the pith. It is very tedious. It usually takes 10 minutes per pomegranate. Is there a better and faster way?

2. Juicing the Red Pearls

Usually, I dump all the Red Pearls into a blender, do a couple of high speed pulse blending, just enough to "break" the flesh away from the small seeds in the Red Pearls.

After, I pour the blended mixture into a cloth bag and squeeze all the fresh juice into a container.

It's another tedious process, as it requires lot of time and strength, for my petite hands to squeeze the cloth bag thoroughly.

Is there a better way to juice these little Red Pearls?

Will buying a slow juicer help? Can a slow juicer juice these little Red Pearls effectively? If so, what are the functionally effective brands i should consider?

I did surf the net previously on Hurom and Juicepresso. Each of them have mixed reviews. I am not sure which is value for money and most importantly, functionally better in juicing ∼ especially pomegranates. I love fresh pomegranate juice as there is a "wine" feel as I sip the drink.

PS : I have also browsed through the extremely long Juicing thread in this Forum as recommended by my elder brother Eat ∼ I am still undecided.

Good morning,

I bought 5 Yota phones for my ministers and three of them broke down after a week. I found out that they were knock offs. Damn.

If you want to get the maximum yield from whatever you are juicing take a look at the Korean brand Angel Juicer. It is made of stainless steel & very solid. You can get it directly from Korea for a 220 volt model. If you buy directly from the maker you will get a 10 year warranty. It costs about US$1,300

Good morning Johnny. Thank you for your recommendation. I am not about to splurge such money on a juicer, hence I am looking at mid range ones like Hurom and Juicepresso.

Any better idea to "slaughter" these pomegranates?

Hi Kerg. Thanks! Hurom looks a little bulky while Juicepresso looks more sleek. That's my dilemma.

On pomegranate, I did check YouTube. There seems to be no innovative method other the the time consuming manual method of removing the red pearls from the husk and pith.

Granted the Angel Juicer is more expensive than many consumer juicers like the Hurom. However you are getting a more lasting unit that give you a higher yield each time you juice. That is because of the design where it has those longer extractor rods.

With the cost of organic produce being so high, the higher yield eventually pay for itself. So for those who are looking for a serious juicer, they should still consider it. Here is a video comparing 2 of the best juicers out there:

Hello Salim. Many thanks for these videos.

I have tried this "beating method" before. The only problem I have with this method is that during the "beating process", the whole kitchen will have juices splattered all over.

Pomegranate juice can easily stain my white kitchen top and the walls too.

Hence, my reluctance on this method.

Once again, many thanks.

PS : I think when I was in Bangkok some time ago, I saw the street hawker used the same method too. For them, it is easier as they do not have to clean up the surrounding mess after "beating".

Hello Johnny, many thanks for the youtube.

i do not doubt the yield advantage of your recommended juicer. Two issues I have with it are as follows∼

1. It is huge. I do not think our Singapore homes have such big kitchen to have this machine put there.

If I want to use it daily and not to keep in some storage, then it has to sit on the kitchen top. I do not think his kitchen or even my kitchen can have the luxury of space for such a bulky machine.

2. It doesn't look easy to clean.

Many thanks for the video. Glad that I am learning things from you guys, aside from my usual "bitching"

PS ∼I was at the mall just now. Juicepresso is retailed at S$550. I was tempted to just grab it, but thought I should see what you guys have to say first.

Used to have quite a number of pomegranates plants in the garden, when I was young. The only way, I know is to eat them as it is....& use agar agar or Jello, make jelly & eat them......the only juicer then I know, is the one you used to squeeze oranges onto glass ones or the steel ones with the handle & press.....

So, it is either, eat them whole...& let the intestines juice them or make into jelly...

Pomegranate is mt Favourite fruit.

I eat it the way nature builds it; ie, put a handful of rubies into mouth, crushed it inside mouth and suck in all the juice. Then spit out the white seeks. None of the juice should be wasted.

Eat it the way nature serve it to you. No need to have style or expensive machineries to eat them!

Hello Hals. Hello Bright. I hope you had a fabulous Saturday. I am going to be a "football widow" soon as he and his friends are getting ready for their EPL matches. I made dinner for he and his friends and they enjoyed my steak.

Back to pomegranate, it is also my favourite fruit. I used to eat and spit the pearls out when younger, though I never know that it can be used to make agar agar.

Hals, that manual juicer is the one I think the hawkers used in Bangkok. It looks like it takes a lot of effort and very messy too. Certainly not my cup of tea.

Anyway, not sure you guys know that pomegranate is actually a super fruit. If you have time, you can read this article. The link is below.

Have a great evening like those guys outside if you are getting ready for your weekend football matches. For me, it's my "own time" now.

I get the pomegranate juice ready made from iherb as a concentrate & mix it with cold water a few times a day. The ones I've tried are

While I was in Thailand I got the real fruit already cut open from the supermarket. I did not know how to eat it with all those seeds:confused:
Are you suppose to swallow all those seeds:confused:

Like any kitchen appliance it will of course take up space.

I store it disassembled, the motor is no bigger than a toaster. In fact I bought a toaster cover from Amazon to protect it while it is not being used.
The long grinders & housing are being stored in the cupboard.

If you clean it after each use, it should be ok. However there is of course some buildup in the grinder housing that is difficult to reach. The buildup does not effect the performance of the machine.
I'm thinking of getting a ultrasonic cleaner to clean fruits & veggies. The ultrasonic cleaner will come in handy to clean the juicer more thoroughly.

Whatever machine you decide, cleaning will always be a hassle. Maybe that is why there are so many juicers that end up in long term storage.

Hi Johnny. Good Morning. It is precisely that I want to put in on the kitchen top so that I will use it, instead of storage.

Hence, aside from easy wash, it has to be reasonably compact while functionally good

Have a great day, johnny.

Hello Eat. I saw your pic. It reminds me that my mum has exactly the same one years ago. I think she might of "cold storage" it as it is too bulky and big.
