U.S. Pilots Say New Chinese Stealth Fighter Could Become Equal of F-22, F-35

China’s new Shenyang J-31 stealth fighter — making its debut next week at the Zhuhai international airshow — could eventually become more than a match for American stealth fighters in battle, several U.S. military and industry officials told USNI News.

The J-31 is China’s latest crack at developing a modern so-called fifth-generation stealth fighter — equivalent in ability to Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor or F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter.

“They’re still in the glossy brochure phase of development, so they still look ten feet tall and bulletproof,” one senior U.S. fighter pilot familiar with the F-35 program told USNI News.
“I think they’ll eventually be on par with our fifth gen jets — as they should be, because industrial espionage is alive and well.”

Many suspect the J-31 is designed using technology stolen from the Pentagon’s nearly $400 billion Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.

“They sure look like F-35 and F-22s don’t they?” one Air Force operational test pilot told USNI News.

The senior U.S. pilot familiar with the F-35 — who has extensive experience flying the Lockheed Martin F-16 Falcon — told USNI News the Chinese jet is now likely more than match for existing fourth generation non stealth American fighters like the Air Force Falcons, Boeing F-15 Eagles and the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

“They’ll probably be a handful right off the bat for all of our fourth gen stuff,” the pilot said.

One former Air Force fighter pilot extensive experience with foreign hardware told USNI News potential air battles might be more about sheer number of jets the Chinese might be able to put into the air versus the superior training of U.S. pilots.

“I worry about numbers more than particular platforms,” the former fighter pilot said.
“I imagine their jets and their weapons are pretty good. Don’t know about the pilots or their capacity to employ.”

Further, the retired pilot noted, airshows are designed to show off weapons to potential buyers, but offer no real information about what jet can really do during an actual combat mission.

“Just remember that airshows are exactly that — airshows.” the former pilot said. “Airshows provide no real clue to capabilities. As such, airshows generally rely on spectacular maneuvers to garner attention without providing substance. No different from the F-15C or the F-22.”

One current Air Force test pilot told USNI News that it would be difficult to gauge just how good the Chinese jet will be.

“Overall at this stage they’re not [operational] so it’s hard, for anyone to truly make a reasonable assessment,” the test pilot said.

There are still many unanswered questions about how the Chinese will operate their aircraft and what kinds of weapons the jets will carry. Perhaps the most important question is how good are the Chinese radars and other sensors compared to their American equivalents.

“How well will organic sensors work to support those weapons?” the test pilot asked rhetorically.

For U.S. industry officials, the J-31’s debut at the Zhuhai airshow signals that the Chinese are planning on selling the jet on the open market.

“I would characterize the J-31 flying at the Chinese airshow as ‘incremental and measured,’” a senior industry official told USNI News.

“There have been some reports that the J-31 maybe be exported. If so, then showing it off makes even more sense to attract prospective buyers,” the official said.

The Chinese are making a lot of progress in developing their aerospace industry.

However, jet engines remain a weak spot for China.

“They have yet to field many of their “new” designs in any quantities,” the industry official said.
“Time will tell.”

Meanwhile, the Russia’s advanced Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E is also making it debut at the Zhuhai airshow.

The Chinese are reportedly interested in the purchase of 24 examples of the modernized Russian-built jet.

There has been much media speculation that the Chinese intend to reverse engineer the aircraft as they have with previous Flanker variants.

“I view the Su-35 buy as a conservative stop-gap measure while they wait for the J-20 and J-31 to enter service,” the industry official said.
“Gotta have aircraft to have an air force.”

China vs. America in the Sky: A Stealth-Fighter Showdown Is Brewing

"China’s new stealth fighters might one day be able to match their American equivalents in battle, Pentagon and industry officials fear."

China’s new stealth fighters might one day be able to match their American equivalents in battle, Pentagon and industry officials fear. Indeed, China is showing off its latest Shenyang J-31 stealth fighter at the Zhuhai air show in the Guangdong province. To meet the challenge, the Pentagon needs to continue to buy the F-35 and start developing a future fighter to counter the rising threat.

“The J-31—along with the J-20 [the other Chinese stealth fighter]—is a tangible demonstration of the efforts made by China to counter the significant advantage the U.S. has with the [Lockheed Martin] F-22 and F-35,” said one senior U.S. military official with extensive experience with so-called fifth-generation fighters. “They recognize that fourth-gen airplanes [like the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, Russian Su-27 and so on] are quickly becoming obsolete. The price of admission to a fifth-gen war is a fifth-gen airplane and they get that.”

Indeed some senior U.S. aviators believe that the J-31—which is thought by many U.S. military and industry officials to be based on stolen F-22 and F-35 technology—will eventually be the equal of the American fighters. “I think they’ll eventually be on par with our fifth-gen jets—as they should be, because industrial espionage is alive and well,” as one senior pilot familiar with the F-35 told USNI News.

(You May Also Like: Will the F-35 Dominate the Skies?)

Even if the J-31 doesn’t sit at 100 percent parity with the F-22 and F-35, it might not matter, because those Chinese aircraft might be able to do enough damage to the U.S. military to make it too expensive to fight. “I think we can probably keep a slight advantage for quite some time, but a slight advantage means significant losses and less of a deterrent,” said one senior Air Force official. “Lets pretend the F-22 confronts current air-to-air threats outside of a SAM [surface-to-air missile] environment and has a 30 to one kill ratio today versus a [Sukhoi] Su-30 or [Shenyang] J-11. When the J-20 and J-31 come around, even a three to one kill ratio advantage becomes costly.”

China is developing the J-20 and J-31 because the F-22 and F-35 are so superior to existing fighters. The Chinese cannot afford to lose thirty jets in exchange for killing a single F-22 any more than the U.S. could if the situation were reversed. “Our competitors know the current reality and are working very hard to avoid the wide gap we have created by investing in those planes,” the senior military official said. “They represent their attempt and creating parity in the skies.”

The senior military official said the very fact that China is developing aircraft like the J-20 and J-31 shows that the Pentagon needs the F-35. “The J-31 should make anyone who questions the need for the F-35 to rethink their logic,” the official said. “Regardless of whatever criticisms you have heard about the Raptor and the Lightning, they are incredible machines that are insanely superior by virtually every metric to anything else flying in the world. They may be complex, expensive and still immature, but they are a quantum leap over every other fighter in our arsenal.”

The senior military official said, however, that while the J-31 looks impressive, there is a lot the United States does not know about its capabilities. “Anyone can make a plane that flies fast and looks stealthy,” he said. “The J-31 looks gorgeous. Aside from the fact it’s an obvious rip-off of the F-35.”

It takes a very long time to develop a stealth fighter—much of that is not because of the aircraft itself, but rather the radar, other sensors and cockpit systems. Developing and perfecting those technologies takes a long time. Further, it takes a long time to perfect manufacturing techniques for an extremely complex warplane like the F-22 or F-35. “The most impressive and important qualities of our fifth-gen fleet are what is on the inside—fused sensors and information dominance,” the official said. “We didn’t develop those over night. It takes a lot of time to get where we are today, which is why we continue to preserve our advantage.”

(You May Also Like: America's F-35- Coming In for a "Crash Landing"?)

China will eventually perfect the J-20 and J-31, however—it is just a matter of time. “They are going get there one day, make no mistake,” the senior official said. “It won’t be tomorrow or the next day, but the fact this place is debuting now should tell you something about China’s commitment.”

J-20 J-31 are capable to eat F-22 F-35 alive.

Pentagon already spent their huge budget which is finance by bonds held by enemy China :D on useless inferrior jets. They can not undo tjos grave mistake and have to bear with suffering losses and disadvantages.

Chinese pilots knows that they have advantage to detect and fire missiles at US jets 3 seconds before US piilots can have the chance to do the same.

1999 F-117A shootdown

The 1999 F-117A shootdown was an incident that took place on 27 March 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, (Operation Allied Force, Operation Noble Anvil), when an Army of Yugoslavia unit used a S-125 Neva/Pechora to down a Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk stealth aircraft of the United States Air Force. The pilot ejected and was rescued by search and rescue forces.[1]

The US Air Force F-117A was developed in the 1970s, entering service in 1983 and officially revealed in 1988.[2] It saw its first combat in 1989 over Panama, and was widely seen as one of the most advanced pieces of US military equipment.[2] At the same time, Yugoslavian air defenses were seen as relatively obsolete.[2]

Unknown to NATO, Yugoslav air defenses operators had found they could detect F-117s with their obsolete Soviet radars after some modifications.[2] In 2005, Colonel Zoltán Dani confirmed this in an interview, suggesting that those modifications involved using long wavelengths, which allowed them to detect the aircraft when the wheel well or bomb bay doors were open.[3] In addition, the Serbs had also intercepted and deciphered some NATO communications, and thus were able to deploy their anti-air batteries at positions best suited to intercept NATO planes.[3]

On March 27, 1999, the 3rd Battalion of the 250th Air Defence Missile Brigade of the Army of Yugoslavia, under the command of Colonel Dani, downed F-117 Air Force serial number 82-0806, callsign "Vega 31".[2][4]

The Army of Yugoslavia unit was equipped with a Yugoslav version of the Soviet Isayev S-125 "Neva" missile system (NATO reporting name, SA-3 "Goa").[Note 1][1][2][5]

At about 8:15 pm local time, with a range of about 8 miles (13 km) several missiles were launched. According to Sergeant Dragan Matić, who was identified in 2009 as the soldier who fired the missiles, they detected the F-117 at a range of about 50 to 60 kilometres (31 to 37 mi), operating their equipment for no more than 17 seconds to avoid being locked on to by NATO anti-air suppression.[2] According to Dani in a 2007 interview, his troops spotted the aircraft on radar when its bomb-bay doors opened, raising its radar signature.[6]

The F-117, callsign "Vega-31", was being flown by Lt. Col. Dale Zelko,[2][7] an Operation Desert Storm veteran.[8] He observed the two missiles punch through the low cloud cover and head straight for his aircraft.[9] The first passed over him, close enough to cause buffeting, but did not detonate. However, the second missile did detonate, causing significant damage to the aircraft and causing it to tumble, out of control.[8] The explosion was large enough to be seen from a KC-135 Stratotanker, flying over Bosnia.[8]

Zelko was subject to intense g-forces as the aircraft tumbled and had great difficulty in assuming the correct posture for ejecting. After his parachute deployed, he used his survival radio to issue a mayday call and was able to contact the KC-135 that had seen him shot down.[8] Zelko used his survival radio while still descending although this was contrary to his training.[8] He reasoned the altitude would give his signal the best possible range and was also sure he would be quickly captured by Serbian forces on the ground and wanted to confirm he was unhurt before this happened.[8]

Zelko landed in a field south of Ruma and around a mile south of a four-lane highway.[Note 2] He quickly concealed himself in a drainage ditch that he had identified as a hold-up site while still descending.[8] There, he felt the shock waves of American bombs dropped by B-2 bombers on targets on the outskirts of Belgrade.[8] He remained undetected, despite the fact he had landed around a mile from his aircraft's crash site, and an intensive search of the area was carried out by the Serbian army, police and local villagers.[8] He was rescued by a U.S. Air Force combat search and rescue team flying a Sikorsky MH-53 helicopter in the early hours of the next morning.[8] He was initially misidentified in press reports as the name "Capt Ken 'Wiz' Dwelle" was painted on the aircraft's canopy. The lost F-117 carried the name "Something Wicked" and had previously flown 39 sorties during Operation Desert Storm.[10]

This was the only time an F-117 was shot down during its time in operational service.[1] It was also the first time that a stealth aircraft has been shot down in the history of military aviation. Some American sources claim that a second F-117A was damaged during the same campaign, allegedly on 30 April; the aircraft returned to base, but it supposedly never flew again.[11][12][13] The 250th Air Defense Missile Brigade also shot down a USAF F-16 fighter on May 2, 1999,[14][15] however these were the only two successes out of the dozens of ground–to–air missiles fired during the conflict.

Aftermath[edit]

Serbian poster "Sorry we didn't know it was invisible".
Photographs show that the aircraft struck the ground at low speed in an inverted position, and that the airframe remained relatively intact.[1] Some pieces of the F-117's wreckage are preserved at the Serbian Museum of Aviation in Belgrade,[16] other pieces of wreckage were reportedly sent to Russia and China, to be used in developing anti-stealth technology.[17] The USAF retired the F-117 in 2008.[18]

Zoltán Dani, now running a bakery, and Dale Zelko, now retired from the US Air Force, have met and developed a friendship in recent years.[19]

THe US later bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade probably to destroy the plane which was aquired by the chinese.......

=================

On the night of May 7–8, the strike was carried out by bombers of the United States Air Force's 509th Bomb Wing flying directly out of Whiteman AFB, Missouri. The bombers were armed with JDAM GPS-guided precision bombs but the geographic coordinates provided by the CIA and programmed into the bombs were those of the Chinese embassy 440 m (480 yd) away. At around midnight local time 5 bombs landed at the location indicated, striking the south end of the embassy almost simultaneously. The embassy had taken precautionary measures in view of the ongoing bombing campaign, sending staff home and housing others in the basement,[6] but the attack still resulted in 3 fatalities, Shao Yunhuan (邵云环), Xu Xinghu (许杏虎) and his wife, Zhu Ying (朱颖), and 20 injuries.

CHEM, a listed company, and its subcontractors allegedly used inferior parts and components produced in China at lesser cost for the military tender contract for CM-32 chassis and power equipment.

This resulted in a significant number of problems for the vehicles, with one CM-32 breaking down and requiring major repairs every two days, according to officials.

The senior executives and accounts for CHEM’s subcontractors — Yi Rong Technology Co (億嶸科技), Wei Shuan Co (崴軒) and Chi Fu Industry Co (啟福工業) — were detained after raids at 37 locations on Thursday, with a total of 57 individuals held for questioning.

CHEM won the NT$7.6 billion procurement contract with a bid of NT$4.8 billion.

However, the firm did not manufacture the required parts and equipment, instead handing the production to the three subcontractors.

end of the day selling weapons is similar to kungfu skills, you keep the lethal technics to yourself in case the students want to hurt you later.

back to horses and manpower will win the war. These equipment based weapons are just useless toys. One support system malfunction the whole system failed.

Wait for drones to take over the fighters. In a few years, fighters will be obsolete !

Chances of anything made by the chinks actually working properly are remote so I don't think the US is losing any real sleep over this matter.

It's one thing to display a glitzy high tech fighter (stolen technology of course). It's another to actually get it to work reliably and to be able to build up the logistical support necessary to keep them flying throughout the course of a war.

So Sua Ku!

PRC develop and use so many of their own models, they are exporting and selling at international trade show exhibition halls

Ok I apologize and do take my words back.

Chances of anything made by the chinks actually working properly are remote so I don't think the US is losing any real sleep over this matter.

It's one thing to display a glitzy high tech fighter (stolen technology of course). It's another to actually get it to work reliably and to be able to build up the logistical support necessary to keep them flying throughout the course of a war.

whens the last time you bought something thats made in the USA be it from electronics to household appliances to automobiles?oh right US manufacturing is almost non existent.even your precious iphones and ipads are made in china.u guys can say US is the best US Is the best all day but who has even seen anything they make that is the best?oh right there are many idiots that buy apple products that are way way overpriced because they are idiots and steve jobs have put a spell on them, because yoooooooooooooooouuuuur mine......but have you seen anything else than US makes that people are willing to pay a huge huge premium on?american washing machines?american tvs?american hard disks?ford motors perhaps?US has all the money in the world but they cannot even make anything that they can give away in the marketplace other than their voodoo junk.
