Blame cannot be 100% on hawker if hawker center is infested with rats. Both should be blamed if indeed the cause is rats.

Hawkers pay high rents and consevancy fees for what? There have been many reports of many rats.

As usual, they are trying to blame the poor hawker 100%

Any lawyers in this forum

<DD>Chef Tan Yong Soon <DD> <DD>Update: Tan Yong Soon has been reprimanded by his boss, minister in charge of the civil service, Teo Chee Hean for his insensitivity. You can read more about it HERE. </DD></DL>Via Wayang Party. Mr Tan Yong Soon is the current Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. He is a SAF Overseas Scholar from the batch of 1974 and had previously served as the CEO of the URA Board; Deputy Secretary (Policy) in Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Defence; as well as Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. An extremely impressive resume.
Recently, Mr Tan has drawn public controversy for a seemingly innocuous travelogue he wrote about his family holiday to Paris to learn cooking French cuisine from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu. The travelogue was published in The Straits Times, Life section on 6 December 2008.
The main issue of contention with his article: The 3 week lesson costs S$15,500 per head and in total, S$46,500 for Mr Tan, his wife and son, not including air tickets and living expenses in France. In addition, Mr Tan had taken 5 weeks work leave for the trip.
To some Singaporean netizens who were quick to criticise Mr Tan on blogs and online forums; Mr Tan’s actions were seen as over-indulgent and insensitive for a senior civil servant to “show-off” his pay and extravagant lifestyle in light of the current economic recession and the government asking the people to brace for tough times ahead.
On the other hand, there are also netizens who stood by Mr Tan, rationalising that he was just spending his own money, earned through honest means.
Either way, Mr Tan may have expected some level of public exposure for having his story run in the national newspaper, but I am not so sure if he had anticipated such strong reactions.
In all fairness, I do not see anything intrinsically wrong with Mr Tan’s action (showiness aside). The whole incident just reflects how polarised online discourse has become in Singapore; with anyone deemed somewhat as an “elite”, immediately vilified and condemned for eternity.

The stall owner claimed that he has always been give a "B" for his record. The NEA on the other hand claimed that the latest mark given to the stall is "C". Obviously one of them is lying. My guess is ........ NEA!

Most like the "C" grade is given to the stall after the incident. The fact that the place is a rat infested area tells a lot on how much work has the NEA been doing.

I agree with you as to who may be lying.

MAKANSUTRA rated this store 2.5 stars out of 3. If it had a C, our TV show MAKANSUTRA will never had been allowed to cover, let alone grade it.

But if people expect perfection of the NEA, GST will have to be raised by 1.5% and the salaries of the Ministers will have to as well! Don't you agree?

I doubt that people are asking for perfection, we are merely asking for an average service. A rat infested hawker centre can hardly be called average. Seriously the ministers are over paid and I am not surprise that next year will report another surplus from tax.

Are you perfect? Am I perfect? Can you expect the NEA to be perfect? The PAP too?
Which country is perfect? You want better service, pay for it! You want our ministers to sleep less for burning the midnight oil to serve the interest of all Singsaporeons, PAY Them More! Nothing is Free!

I am amazed by the reply by NEA - who said that the cleaniness and maintenance of the hawker centre is responsibility of the hawkers - and given that the interim hawker centre is funded and built by the hawkers - the cleaniness and maintenance is not as frequent as funds are limited.

Since when NEA discharge its responsibilites of maintance food and environmental safety? When 2 minahs genna food poisoning, they drag their feet on the issue.

When an ang moh was overcharged for prawns - they acted swiftly by banning the hawker - they are exercising their jurisidiction in Newton but saying its not their responsibility in Geylang? What the fuck?

It is obvious to many now that paying more does not yield a better return. If the ministers are sleeping like a log now with the amount we are paying, then it is right time to sack those who sleep well. With the salary we are paying them, we had better see more baldness from our ministers, at least they will shine more like Shamugaranam.

Pray tell me the alternative to the kind of high calibre ministers we are having now? Nearly all are scholars and with military experiences to boot! Who? Please, Who? You just can't go wrong sticking with the PAP and it's about time for a raise too. If not they are going to bring their talent elsewhere!
