Serie A champion Juventus to play Singapore team

SINGAPORE: Newly-crowned Serie A champions Juventus will be in Singapore on August 16 to play against a Singapore Select side made up of local and foreign S.League stars.

The match will take place at the new National Stadium located at the Singapore Sports Hub.

Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo, along with captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, will make the trip to Singapore after representing Italy in the upcoming World Cup.

"We always relish the challenge of playing against some of the best players in the world and our team will be training hard to put in a good display in front of an anticipated huge crowd," said Football Association of Singapore spokesman Gerard Wong.

A full strength squad, including Argentine forward Carlos Tevez and Italian international defender Giorgio Chiellini, will compete in Singapore. - CNA/cy

Football: Earlier kick-off time for Juventus-Singapore game on Aug 16

SINGAPORE: The Aug 16 curtain-raiser football game between Juventus Football Club and a Singapore selection team at the Sports Hub's new National Stadium will kick off at 6pm, instead of the original 7.30pm. This is due to "operational reasons", organisers said in a statement on Tuesday (July 29).

The star-studded Juventus team is likely to feature new signings Patrice Evra from Manchester United and Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, among other players.

Other notable names include World Cup star Paul Pogba, and Italy’s goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon. Also in the lineup is Carlos Tevez, the scorer of 19 goals in Serie A last season for Juventus.

Tickets are available online at Sports Hub Tix (www.sportshubtix.sg), and they are priced from S$45 to S$180 for adults and S$30 to S$45 for children. - CNA/xk

Football: Singapore Selection squad to face Juventus unveiled

SINGAPORE: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) on Thursday (July 31) announced the Singapore Selection squad to face Italian Serie A champions Juventus at the National Stadium on Aug 16.

A total of 21 players have been called up, of which 18 are Singaporeans; the remaining three are foreigners who ply their trade in the S.League. Among the Singaporean contingent, 16 are national team players led by captain Shahril Ishak and vice-captain Hariss Harun. The three foreigners are Nicholas Leandro Velez, Miroslav Pejic (both from Warriors FC) and Sirina Camara (Home United FC).

“We are treating this match as part of the preparations for the AFF Suzuki Cup at the end of this year, so most of the players are part of the national set-up,” said Bernd Stange, the national team coach, who will take charge of this team.

“I have also added a few stars from the S.League who have performed well this season. I believe this squad will be able to play the sort of game I want the national team to play, and it will be a good chance to see where we stand after our recent training tour to Austria where we faced some top European teams.”

Stange added that the players are looking forward to playing in the first football match at the new National Stadium. “We seek the full support of all Singapore fans to make it a great atmosphere and a historic night to remember.”

The friendly will take place at the revised kick off time of 6pm. Tickets are available through Sports Hub Tix (www.sportshubtix.sg).

Fernando Llorente scored a first-half hat-trick as Juventus thrashed an Indonesian Super League all-stars team 8-1 on Wednesday.

Andrea Pirlo levelled for Juve almost immediately after Srdjan Lopicic had given the hosts a shock early lead in Jakarta.

Spaniard Llorente then took ownership of the game with his quickfire treble and Sebastian Giovinco added a fifth for the Italian champions before the break.

Substitute Kingsley Coman then bagged his first Juve goal in the 66th minute, before Carlos Tevez and Simone Pepe completed the rout for Massimiliano Allegri's men.

The home side surprisingly went ahead in the third minute when Lopicic made the most of slack marking to side-foot home a corner from close range, but Pirlo equalised from the spot from the next attack after Giovinco was tripped in the area.

Llorente then took centre stage and put Juve ahead in the 16th minute by lashing home from just inside the box after a poor defensive header from Zulkifli Syukur, before he extended their advantage soon after when he tapped Stephan Lichtsteiner's centre into an empty net.

The duo combined again for Llorente's third, this time the Spaniard planting a firm header into the bottom right-hand corner from the Swiss' accurate cross.

Giovinco got in on the act on 35 minutes, the diminutive forward drilling a left-foot shot into the far-right corner.

A host of changes saw the tempo slow somewhat after the break, but Juve notched a sixth when Coman turned home substitute Pepe's cross for his maiden Juve strike.

Two minutes later, Juve made it seven when Tevez converted the rebound after Pepe's shot had hit the woodwork.

And Pepe capped a fine run-out off the bench when he latched onto Tevez's throughball and deftly clipped the ball over the advancing keeper in the closing stages.
