LKY World City Prize, Water Prize given out

Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam (2nd L) presents the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize to Suzhou for its sound planning principles and urban management.



SINGAPORE: Two districts -- one in China, the other in the United States -- have been honoured for sustainable urban development and water management practices.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam gave out the prizes on Monday evening.

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize was presented to Suzhou, which is in the Jiangsu Province in China, for its sound planning principles and urban management.


The city has transformed itself into an innovative, high-value and service-oriented economy, while still preserving historical and cultural elements within its old quarters.

Orange County Water District received the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize for its pioneering work in groundwater management and water reclamation.

The district was also lauded for its outstanding public policy and community outreach programmes aimed at bringing about public acceptance of potable water reuse.
