KUALA LUMPUR - The number of husbands being abandoned by their foreign wives who ran off with their children is "alarming".

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said most cases involved women from Indonesia or Vietnam, who had been living in the country for one or two years.

He said that this year, at least six foreigners left their Malaysian husbands, five of whom ran off with their children.

"Last year, there were 19 cases, of which 13 included children being taken away from their fathers.

"These children are Malaysian citizens aged from 1 to 8 years old," Chong said, adding that there were cases where fathers had to pay large sums to see their children.

Chong said it was hard to settle these cases, as it was difficult to keep track of the runaway wives once they leave the country.

He also warned Malaysian men to be wary about marrying foreign women.

"I was told that most of these men meet their wives through marriage agents, who act as matchmakers."

uala Lumpur - Many Malaysians who married foreign "mail-order brides" have found themselves in a spot after their wives left the country. Most of them also took their children.

In all the cases, the women left while their husbands were at work.

MCA Public Services and Com*plaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said 25 such cases have been reported since last year.

"Of the number, 18 disappeared with the children," he said.

Vietnamese women are the highest on the list, followed by Indonesian and China nationals.

In four cases, the women had even demanded money from their husbands in exchange for the children.

"The demands ranged between RM15,800 and RM31,600 to surrender a child," said Chong.

While some men were willing to pay, they doubt they would get their child back.

"The best way for the men is to seek the help of the agent who introduced them to their wives," Chong said at a press conference.

He said the agents would know how to get in touch with the foreign wives.

One victim who went to his wife's village in Vietnam to find his child was beaten up by villagers.

Chong said these men were legally married to their foreign wives and that their children were Malaysian citizens.

"This matter has become very serious in our country over the last six years," he said. "Malaysian men must be very careful when choosing their partners."

Even the authorities and embassies were not able to help them deal with the matter, he added.

SINGAPORE: 95 per cent of the 70,600 foreign spouses had their Singapore citizenship applications approved within 12 months of submission as at 31 December 2012.

In a written parliamentary response on Tuesday to Nominated MP R Dhinakaran, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean said foreign spouses, who were granted citizenship under the Family Ties Scheme, were typically permanent residents for about five years before they took up citizenship.

Mr Dhinakaran had asked Mr Teo the average time these spouses spent waiting for their applications to go through.
