it is not hidden in the sense there was a public declaration......but the point is still that whether it has been accepted to be considered independent......not all public declarations are recognised as u are aware..

The smoking gun is in the following statement in ST dated 1 Sep 1963:
"We look upon ouselves as trustees for the Federal Government in these 15days. We will exercise these powers in the interest of Malaysia"
as a sovereign independent country, surely you don't make this type of public statement??
Contrast with the wordings in wiki:
On August 31, Lee declared Singapore to be independent with the PAP government to act as trustees for fifteen days until the formation of Malaysia on September 16
here also the government was an elected government, why has it got to act as trustees???? trustees for who????

What LKY is saying is: Singapore is independent (in name) but is so only for the purpose of joining Malaysia when the formalities are settled.
