The New Paper

Mr Cheong wrote in his book that Mrs Goh Chok Tong (left), patron of National Kidney Foundation, wanted to settle the case against its chief executive TT Durai (middle) amicably. But SPH Chairman Lim Kim San(right)wanted to bring him to justice.
SINGAPORE - Former Straits Times editor Cheong Yip Seng publishes tell-all including anecdotes about ESM Goh Chok Tong and the NKF saga, among other things that readers didn't know.

THE NKF SAGA

Mr Cheong wrote that Mrs Goh Chok Tong had worked behind the scenes to try to settle the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) saga amicably.

Then-NKF chief executive TT Durai took The Straits Times to court to sue for defamation, upset over an article's suggestion that he was extravagant.

"In March the following year (2005) before the case went to court, NKF sent out feelers: Why not try and settle it in the Singapore Mediation Centre instead?

We agreed. But before mediation began, another attempt, one of several over the next two months, was made to settle out of court.

NKF's patron, Mrs Goh Chok Tong, wife of the senior minister, sent word: Could we settle to avoid unpleasant publicity?

She would come to News Centre in Toa Payoh to meet CEO Alan Chan and me, and would bring along NKF chairman Richard Yong and one of NKF's directors, Matilda Chua.

The 'without prejudice' meeting was held in the board room.

By then, with Davinder Singh paying close, personal attention, we had amassed material we were confident would set the trial alight...

What we gathered by way of evidence so incensed (SPH chairman) Lim Kim San, he vowed that Durai must be brought to justice."

So why wasn't this reported in the newspaper then? Why he didnt disclose this about Mrs Goh's involvement in courts? Because he scared that he would be removed by GCT?

Mrs.Goh wasn't involved in the courts, this happened not in the courts. What talking you?

Its TT Durai's own fault, nobody can control him and it seems even Goh also cannot persuade him not to be reckless.
I have worked with such CEO before, they are arrogant and do stupid things and not listen to rational ideas.

Zun Boh? Like Lau Goh mentions Ah Loong slapping Danabalan Never happened? :D

What this means is that if it were not for pressure from a heavyweight to bring Durai to justice, he would have got away with it and laughed all the way to the bank.

Being the Patron of NKF, it would be in her interest to avoid negative publicity on Durai's largesse.

that's the whole flaw of placing big names in wallpaper position. don't have brains to chk the story bf jumping in making a fool of oneself. i just wonder who tactingly gave approval for sph to proceed w durai.

Why does she need to negotiate for a truce ? Is TT Durai so important to her ?
