Latest Badminton News : Gunalan kena Punched .....

One must also mention Svend Pri and also Prakash Padukone who added much excitement into the then badminton scene.

morten frost was Jack's idol as a kid...what happened to Yang Yang? whats he doing now

Why no one mentioned singapore's greatest badminton player Wong Peng Soon?

Is Rudy Hartono aka Liang Hai Liang in Mandrain ?..i rem there was much hooha over a possibLe matchup bet Rudy
and 'The Thing' from China ; but somehow it did not take pLace; right ?..

Rudy Hartono = 梁海量

Rudy's parents emigrated to Java from Fujian, China.

Many experts said that notwithstanding Rudy's 8 All-England titles, he wouldn't stand a chance against 'The Thing', 唐仙虎, who is widely regarded as the greatest player of his age (maybe of all time - Lin Dan might disagree). But the lack of sporting relations between communist China and Indonesia during the Cultural Revolution put paid to a fascinating duel between the two.

When the Chinese met the Indonesians in that historic 1980 contest in Singapore, 'The Thing' had already retired, and it was left to the generation of Han Jian and Luan Jin to battle Liem Swie King and an aging Hartono.

Pardon me for my ignorance. Why is 'The Thing' called "The Thing" ?

I'm not sure but I used to think they named him after that awesome alien in the titular 1951 sci-fi movie because

1. Tang was an unorthodox player, making it very difficult for his opponents to read him;
2. He was simply awesome, with incredible mental strength and a complete arsenal of strokes. At his best he was unbeatable.

By the way, both Tang and Hou Chia Chang were born in Indonesia, but went back to China after the Chinese Civil War.

Watch a video of 'The Thing' here:

liang ke liang? ...

he switched from 1 grip 2 another n stil won ...

Yes Liang ke Linag..forgotten about many of the names already, for badminton, I had a dunlop racket (wooden), Carlton, both the shuttercocks & the racket, them came Yoneyama (Yonex), bought the mid range ones, the better ones too expensive. For the Ping Pong bat I had the butterfly brand both the hand grip & the pencil grip ones...we were crazy enough to get the rubber, reglued at Bras Basah Road, one side for fast the other side for slow...

I recalled we used to take bets playing against those who dare to challenge us to a game, we have our ordinary ping ping bats & the 'tan chiak' ones with the specil glue ones... $5 a game.; make good pocket money too, ha ha ha, that goes for badminton...this was fun... ha ha ha ha

Played a lot of Ping Pong & Badminton, later took up Tennis & Squash, even jogged a lot...

Difficult to say. When Rudy Hartono was conquering the world he beat his opponents by very wide margins eg 15:3, 15:4, 15:0. Even when he had retired and came out of retirement, he could still defeat Liem Swie King, the then no.1.

Incidentally Lin Dan had lost once to our own Ronald Susilo.
