A SMALL amount of radioactive iodine-131 has been found in a sample of fish taken from a wholesale market in Hong Kong, the Government said today.

Hong Kong has been monitoring radiation levels in the city's food and water supply and atmosphere in the wake of the crisis at Japan's Fukushima nuclear power station.

The level of radiation found in the sample of grey mullet by Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department - 7.7 becquerels a kilogram - was well below the Government guideline of 100 becquerels a kilogram.

"Based on risk assessment, normal consumption of grey mullets at this low radiation level will not pose any health risk to the consumer," the Government said in a statement.

The statement did not say whether the iodine could be traced to the Fukushima plant, which released radioactive material into the air and water after it was badly damaged in Japan's earthquake-tsunami disaster.

港西面水域捕獲「輻射烏頭」

(星島日報 報道)漁護署 昨驗出屯門 區批發市場的捕撈烏頭有微量放射性碘－131。據悉，同批烏頭共有一千斤，由一艘位於青山灣的漁船在香港西面水域捕獲，相信全部魚已售出，主要分銷至屯門、元朗一帶街市。有學者估計，香港水域有機會受放射性物質污染，不排除鄰近核電廠設施出現泄漏或有抗癌藥廢物處理不當所致。

　　含微量碘—131

　　漁護署昨抽取屯門青山魚類批發市場採集的捕撈烏頭樣本，結果驗出每公斤含7.7貝可的碘－131，沒有超出食品法典委員會每公斤100貝可的指引限值，相信正常食用該低輻射 量的烏頭不會對健康構成風險。

　　城大生物及化學系副教授林漢華認為，本港驗出烏頭樣本受微量放射性碘－131污染，有可能顯示香港水域受到污染。他分析，由於日本 距港甚遠，相信受日本核輻射事故影響的機會相當低。他解釋，烏頭受到放射性物質污染有機會是捕捉源頭附近環境，有核電廠設施出現泄漏或含有抗癌藥等醫療廢物處理不當所致。

　　疑鄰近核電廠泄漏

　　他認為，應就該樣本捕捉源頭附近環境檢驗，一旦驗出含有其他放射物，就可能是核設施出現泄漏，擔心香港附近核裝置出現問題。「放射性碘131屬非自然放射物，只能於反應堆製造出來……烏頭又不是食物鏈中最低層，意味著整個食物鏈低下層都受到污染。」

　　香港放射科醫學院名譽秘書張志偉表示，人體吸入放射性碘131不會有即時危險，但患甲狀腺癌的風險將輕微增加；又稱由於碘131半衰期不長，只有八天，經人體吸入的 放射性碘131會隨時間流失，但建議政府應繼續監察有關情況。

　　出產本港著名「楊氏烏頭」的楊氏水產董事楊瑞良表示，本地烏頭養殖戶逾二百戶，全由元朗鮮魚行批發市場批發，相信驗出的烏頭非陸上養殖，據他了解，青山魚類批發市場多來自南中國海。他擔心市民誤以為本地烏頭有事，以致本地養殖戶成「無辜受害者」，影響生意。立法會 議員李華明 亦促請政府應盡快跟進該批烏頭來源，公布入口，並加強該入口的魚類輻射測試，加密檢驗。

　　千斤魚獲已流入市面

　　漁護署回覆稱，驗出放射性碘－131的同批烏頭由一艘位於青山灣的漁船於香港西面水域捕獲。相信重一千斤的魚全部已售出，主要分銷到屯門、元朗一帶的街市。記者 陳正怡 洪藹婷

If anyone is afraid of radioactivity poisoning, go look into brown seaweed. It's a good detoxifier for heavy metals & radiation poisoning. The russians used it to treat the victims of the Chernobyl disaster.
