“Don’t drink if you’re driving, and don’t drive if you’re drinking.” Since the ban was introduced earlier this year, police have conducted random roadside tests, and must carry breathalyzer kits to all reported traffic accidents.
A Zhejiang man, named Wang Mou, was cycling back to his home in Gangyao Cun, Yongfeng township, after having been out late eating and drinking with friends. After they left the restaurant around 22:00, as he was nearing Yongfeng township, lost control of his bike, ended up travelling on the wrong side of the road and crashed head-on into a three-wheeled cart. Both Wang and the woman driving the cart, Mrs Guo, sustained minor injuries.
On May 17th, the man was charged 50 RMB for the offence. This is the first time in Zhejiang province that somebody has been charged with drunk-driving a non-motor vehicle. The police commented that regardless of whether it’s an electric vehicle, or a motorized vehicle, or even a non-motorized vehicle, the law now clearly states that you cannot be drunk and in charge of any vehicle.
A few questions
This raises further questions as to what counts as a ‘vehicle’. Do shopping trolleys count? Is drunken skateboarding a crime? How about if you are drunk with a toy car in your pocket?
