SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 35-year-old Indian domestic helper for stealing more than S$30,000 worth of jewellery from her employer.

Three Indian nationals were also arrested for dishonestly receiving stolen property.

The incident happened Tuesday.

The maid had left the house at about 8.45 am. When she returned at around 10.00 am, she discovered that the whole house was ransacked.

However, police officers suspected something might be amiss due to the maid's behaviour.

The breakthrough came when the officers found some of the stolen jewellery hidden inside the water tank of the toilet bowl.

More evidence was gathered.

The domestic helper was confronted with the evidence, and she eventually revealed that she had staged the housebreaking.

The three Indian nationals whom the domestic helper had passed the stolen loot to was arrested in an ambush later that day.

All the stolen jewellery was recovered.

The domestic helper will be charged in Court Thursday.

If convicted she could be jailed up to seven years and fined.

Investigations against the other three suspects are still on-going.

The offence of dishonestly receiving stolen property carries maximum sentence of five years' jail and fine.
