SINGAPORE - The salary review for political appointment holders will not affect senior civil servants, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said yesterday.

Speaking at a Home Team event, Mr Teo confirmed that the recently-appointed salary review committee headed by Mr Gerard Ee will not examine civil servants' pay but instead focus on political appointment holders.

This is in line with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's announcement at the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet that the pay review affected only "political salaries".

However, any useful lessons learnt from the review may be used to benchmark salaries for the public sector in the future, DPM Teo continued.

This is to ensure that public officers are properly rewarded and recognised for the work they do, he said. DPM Teo is also the minister in charge of the civil service.

The current pay formula applies to ministers and political office-holders, as well as senior civil servants. Their salaries are pegged to top private sector pay in six professions, including bankers and lawyers.

The benchmark is set at two-thirds the median incomes of the top eight earners in the six professions.
