What's there to do in Kansas?

Might have an offer to go down there to work for a bit (biotech startup in corn country, strangely enough.).

So anything interesting in corn country?

Besides trying to sex with cows, that is...

Cheers,

Fcuking boring place to be...but very cheap to live there.

It'd be nice to see redneck country, and get to know what heartland, blue collar Americans live out in the South. Remember that however, city habits and views aren't very welcomed. And if you want to be welcomed, its best to join one of their churches, and go for the BBQs.

And you don't wanna read the New York Times in the Kansas rural counties. A hometown newspaper would be better.

Position is for a team leader in a biopharm startup, leading a process development team to develop an industrial recovery & purification process to turn genetic recombinant rice into bio-pharmaceuticals (pharmers - they're growing therapeutic drugs in rice). They're growing human lysozyme (in tears), lactoferrin (in breast milk), serum albumin (blood) & immunoglobulins (blood) inside rice - scary huh?

They got a good expression platform, getting pretty high yields of targets on a weight basis.

Good pay ($120k/yr + other benefits), and stock options plan.

Thinking of juggling weekend MBA classes at stanford. Think it'll work?

Will be flying down for 3 days in a couple of weeks to take a look at their fields, facilities etc.

...find Dorothy and follow the Yellow Brick Road?

JWNY

Yup, he should follow the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy in her yellow dress will lead the way. Say hello to Tin Man for me, loved that character!

Also, remember to shave your arm pit hair if u decide to take up the job permanently cos YOU will be dragged to those evangelical fanatics hothouse for worship. And u know those evangelicals speak in tongues, raise their arms up high high, so if u have lots of arm pit hair its a cause of worry cos hair stores up dirt & moisture & voila YOU get RIPE arm pits. Smelly lah! So don't let them brand you as SMELLY asian hor!

Don't think I'll be sticking around on the weekends. Got better things to do - flying out friday night and coming back sunday evening, every week, if I do take the job.

Sounds pretty much like biotech for sure. I'd say go for it, if you feel good about it. Still Stanford MBA courses is like in California right? You mean you have to fly in and out during the weekend?

Wouldn't it be very tiring as a lifestyle? It'd probably be better if you study in a university that's on the east coast, than on the west.

Problem is I don't feel good about it, despite of good pay. If republicans win again in Nov, USA might roll back on transgenic technology even more. And I think there's a gd chance that McCain might win (I would prefer the Dems to win, but in terms of electoral college, the whole center is red.). Kansas is a republican stronghold. Folks there are X'tian conservatives (Pro-life, anti-stem cells), they love GWB, and asians are a very small minority down there (<3% - more than half of which are koreans, which are a very insular community in middle america.). I can imagine the reaction from the typicial Kansan neighbours when they realise the company I work for grows human proteins from genetically altered rice with human DNA in it.

Kansas is smack right in the central of USA, so flying either way (northeast or california) is actually the same. And there's essentially nothing interesting to do (for a Singaporean) in Kansas on the weekends. Might as well go somewhere more happening if you got $$ to spend.

I'm actually leaning towards other job offers at the moment, this one doesn't cut it, despite of the high pay cheque. Stock options are worth nothing if the firm crashes before IPO. Going down there next week for 3-day all expense paid trip by them, and unless they really impress me, probably will turn them down.

Cheers,
Trout

Trout, I think it'd be better if you do some research on the stem cell thingy- because nowadays in the Beltway, there are more congressmen and women and Senators voting for the stem cell. It only failed because of President Bush and the pro-life lobbyist groups.

But if Kansas didn't hold a special November vote to ban stem cell, and doesn't have one this year- despite being pro-life- I think you're safe. Plus the current Governor of Kansas is an Obama supporter and surrogate.

Well, you still can try to Kans As with the big Chief, and brew your own cornholic drink.

Try looking for the pair of red shoe and follow the yellow brick road.

Best of all go line fising for TROUT:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

I think its no surprise, since I'm a Christian also.

But while I find those guys okay- albeit from afar- I don't share some of their more right-wing views. I mean, there's a difference between owning a pistol, or a shotgun for self-defence and hunting and owning an assault weapon, as an ordinary citizen.

If one needs an M-16 or M4A1 to go hunting for deers in a forest, one would suspect he's not getting such a gun to go hunting animals in the first place!

you may not fully understand the need for assualt weapons for these republicans, if you haven't understood how US became independent from the British and what US has undergone throughout history.

they just want to have an extra protection against corrupt or authoritative regime from taking over the country, because freedom to them is very important. of course we have to watch out for wackos mowing innocent victims down...but that should not stop people from owing rifles...

besides, in remote some places, the nearest law enforcement agency maybe hours away. having the possibility to own guns gives them a peace of mind, in addition to having a choice to excercise their freedom.

just imagine, if the war comes to SGP, do you really have time to draw your rifles?
