Wang Chin Sing, 44, who is out of prison but still under a home detention scheme, said he first found out about Mr Tang's kidney problem in 2006. He again heard another doctor mention Mr Tang's illness last year.
When Wang met Whang, also 44, at the Funan DigitaLife Mall last April, Wang said Whang told him that if ever his uncle-in-law needed a kidney, Wang should charge him for it as he was very rich.
They decided to charge Mr Tang $300,000 and split the balance equally, with each getting about $100,000 after expenses.
Wang found Mr Tang an Indonesian donor, but their scheme was exposed by the local authorities last year.
At the start of the trial against Whang yesterday, Wang was one of three witnesses called by the prosecution. Asked by Deputy Public Prosecutor Chay Yuen Fatt why he had charged Mr Tang about five times more than what he had charged another kidney buyer, Ms Juliana Soh, Wang replied: 'The accused (Whang) mentioned that Tang Wee Sung is a very rich man.' After Mr Tang called Wang, they met at Mr Tang's house in early May. At a second meeting a few days later, Mr Tang agreed to pay $300,000 for a kidney. On May 12, Wang banked $50,000 in cash he received from Mr Tang.
