SINGAPORE: It took about three years for Taiwan marathon drama "Love" to finish its 787-episode run on Channel 8.

Some 939,000 viewers tuned in for the final episode of the melodrama over Channel 8 on Friday, waving goodbye to its iconic characters like the lovable rogue Guo Cong Min (Ni Qi Min), villainous Xie Ming Ming (Jiang Zu Ping) and the rest of the show's memorable cast.

And who could forget the show's iconic opening theme song?

The drama, which began airing in November 2008, proved very popular with local audiences and was eventually aired every weeknight instead of only on weekends, going on to become one of Channel 8's highest rated shows last year.

While many fans of the show will mourn its passing, others, like food stall assistant 60-year-old Madam Mary Ong is happy that the show is over.

"It feels great to watch a good show till the end," said Ong, an ardent fan of the series.

77-year-old cleaner Madam Chong Voon Lin, who caught every episode religiously, was also glad that the show ended, though for very different reasons.

"It is just too long. The show spans years, not months.

"But after I watched the show for some time, it felt like a waste not to watch the later episodes and find out what happens in the end, so I had to keep watching," said Chong with a smile.

Bye, bye "Love", Hello "Kampong Ties"

Following the conclusion of "Love", local 30-part drama "Kampong Ties" will take over the 7pm weeknight time slot.

"Kampong Ties" tells the tale of two women Feng Yueman (Ann Kok) and Lin Shuixian (Yvonne Lim) in a kampong (Malay for "village") who become sworn sisters and together face the many adversities life throws their way - from abusive husbands to scheming in-laws.

The drama is touted as having a fresh, involving storyline and a cast of veteran actors.

But will it be enough to replace the missing "Love" in the hearts of viewers here?

Chong, who caught the debut episode of "Kampong Ties" on Monday, said it is "still too early" to tell if the show is good.

"I'll have to wait and see," she said.

Ong, on the other hand, expressed that she quite liked the debut episode of "Kampong Ties".

"I hope people watch this so they know the hardship we went through last time," said Ong.

"The sort of things in the show actually happened. It brings back a lot of memories about kampong life."

"Kampong Ties" airs every weeknight, 7pm on Channel 8. <!-- Zone Tag : Channel News asia In Text <script type="text/javascript"> innity_pub = "66368270ffd51418ec58bd793f2d9b1b"; innity_zone = "12251"; innity_width = "**"; innity_height = "**"; innity_country = "SG"; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.innity.com/network.js"></script>-->
