Actually, this list is not exhaustive. One prime suspect missing is Melvin Tan, who left but went back into WP again. Most probably he regretted leaving in the first place thus, just walked back again. Tony Tan also left WP but he performed relatively well as a new candidate, though he could have done even better if he had made the right choice of constituency to fight.

For me, it was great experience and I wouldn't have the good opportunity to get to do all the things I enjoy doing. Some people would have regretted not to have the opportunity to join WP to stand as candidates and some even thought that they could have gained more if they stood under WP. Frankly speaking, there isn't "if" in politics.

Some have felt that Nicole might have won if she stood under WP banner but that is greatly mistaken. Nicole's media talent would have buried if she stood under WP, just like Angela in Yishun. She will not be given the full opportunity for media exposures as she had enjoyed in NSP and definitely, she will not be who she is right now. It is really naive to make such suggestions.

Goh Meng Seng

So why did you leave?

You were denied the media exposure? You were censored by LTK and banned from posting on forums?

Would you say that it was worthwhile to quit over this?

Would you rather have media exposure or would you rather have a seat in Parliament?

People leaving, not part of the slate or the role they play in the party is very much up to the Secretary General or in some cases the power brokers. The individual has little say or power over their own political fate.

As more quality candidates come to the fore, the lesser ones will feel unfairly marginalised. The hardest part is when quality candidates turn on the 11th hour and still get a place in the slate. Its not a pretty sight but its the same world all around where democratic politics is in play.
.

Yes, the Sec-Gen has immense power, and often uses it through the collective of the CEC.

However, I disagree with you on quality candidates turning up at the 11th hour. The WP does not take those in; that is not how it operates. WP under LTK rewards loyalty; thus, LLL was re-fielded However, 11th hour candidates is how the SDP operates; after all, it took in TJS and AYG on exactly that basis when, apparently, WP turned them down.

As I have said, the main aim in life is to be happy. Well there are people like Melvin Tan. who. left and return but ended up as a very unhappy fellow because he didnt get cadre membership.

at the very least, I have enjoyed to the fullest with the rare opportunity to try out the model I have in mind.

Why talk about the has beens? the has beens have tried and failed and they should be allowed to rest in peace.
They do deserve a toast for their efforts at keeping the opposition banner alive.
In this breath, people like Dr. Poh Lee Guan, Melvin Tan and Yaw Shin Leong also have to be remembered. They were there at the toughest and bleakest hour when the going was not good for the opposition. The people in the running now are just like the half-baked infantry coming in to an easier fight just after the rangers and combat engineers have cleared up Omaha Beach.

If there is a desire to be fair in comments, pay the tribute accordingly. If the intention is to be unkind and unfair, then by all means.

I think the people who are running down the people who left WP as the going is good are probably the same guys who would run down people for joining an opposition party before it was cool to do so.

I don't know how much this is related to the topic of people who have left the WP but we have unconfirmed reports of people joining:

All is fair in love and war, and indeed in politics too. Whether one is remembered or not is really quite irrelevant. In the BE one politician thought that the memory of his late father could bring him the vote. He must have been terribly shocked to discover the extent to which that is not the case.

As Sylvia has sexplained to all members in 2009, events attendance must be above 70% for minimum 3 yrs before u can be considered for cadre.
And attendance must be in full form; meaning u have to be there before e event for pre-event setup prep all e way to e end of post-mortem debriefing.....not just show face

There's a small team of ladies asking who came, what time come, what time leave & who he/she bring along plus what he/she did for all events in WP these days.
From I heard, detailed post mortem lepork are made detailing e above at all 6 & 7 wards.

what i heard is :
most volunteers dun not even want to be members, they are just normal peasants, no elite like profs or lawyers

want to do some activity for their community and neighbourhood and join in the fun for lantern festivals and xmas party....

if they start taking attendance, it will scare away all the new residents who have a strong sense of community and step forward to help @ events

what diff are they from pap....

most people still have stigma associating with opp... if wp start thinking they are big fucks
i got 2 words for them... "FUCK OFF"

I hope my source is correct and yours is wrong

if after 2 or 3 yrs, you still dunno who is committed and qualified to be candidates, then something wrong with WP selection

Big party means u have to monitor more systematically.
Also, it's mandated by law for all pol societies to take down details of those who attended their events.
If u goto NSP, SDP, SPP & RP Open House, they take ya name, address, phone number as well.

Kudos to all those who have offered themselves as alternative candidates at one time or another! Oppposition is thankless task here but at a personal front, it sure beats being an armchair critics. Many armchair forumers here would be regretting at what they could have done as they aged along year after year, writing and writing on this forum for so many years, ironically they thought ex-wp members were the ones kicking themselves.

If you have what it takes and reading this, seize the opportunity to go out and stand up for your countrymen. Many of the names mentioned above are people who have jobs outside Spore, family commitments etc. People come and go in life, its perfectly fine. Important thing is to have stood out for what you believe. They have all done well and are still being talked about today. Politicians come from all walks of life, and then go back into their lives again. Not the elite achievement type resume mould that PAP wants you to believe. It is good for democracy and this is what life is all about.

this is more sensible and fair, the problem with forums like these is that you have a lot of people trying to show off how smart they can be as opposed to the people who stood up to be counted at the frontlines... And what's more ... All such comments from behind a nick and a keyboard... If such action makes one feel proud... Well it speaks a lot about the person commenting.
