JOHOR BARU - The head of the Pasir Gudang MCA Crisis Relief Squad was shocked when he received an SMS message demanding RM2,000 (S$799) or face the risk of being killed.

Quek Sing Chee, 49, said he was packing goodie bags to be given to flood victims in the Johor Baru south area when he received the message at 2.27pm yesterday.

"I later found out that the exact threatening message was also sent to another squad member earlier.

"I tried calling the number, but there was no response," he said at the Chinese Press Club here.

Quek said the SMS had stated that the sender's boss was a gangster and that he must bank in RM2,000 into an account or his family and he would be killed, he said, adding that this was the first time he had received such a message.

Pasir Gudang MCA public complaints bureau head Chen Boon Ping urged others who had received the same message to lodge police reports.

"We believe there is a syndicate trying to cheat people by issuing threatening messages. We hope the perpetrators will be arrested soon," he added.

Meanwhile, Seri Alam OCPD Supt Ruslan Zainuddin said the police were investigating the case under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
