Police have urged the public not to believe rumours spread via SMS asking them to buy food in bulk as rioting is expected during 13th general election (GE13).
Penang police election spokesperson ACP Roslee Chik said the police received information on the fake SMS from members of the public.
"The information is false. The public should not believe such nonsense. We have enough manpower to maintain security and public order," he told reporters in George Town today.
Individuals arrested and convicted for spreading false SMS will be dealt with under the Sedition Act and Section 232 of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Act for abusing phone lines to convey false information.
Roslee urged the public not to circulate the false SMS to friends or family members as it could create panic, anxiety and threaten public order.
He also said 54 police reports have been made in relation to the flying of party flags since parliament was dissolved on April 3.
The crime rate in Penang has dropped more than 20 percent since parliament was dissolved following the flying of party flags in the middle of the night.
