BN's chief tactical weapon for decades has been encouraging defection. Unlike Singapore which does not allow an elected MP to change party and the MP has to quit if they leave or get sacked by the party by law.
BN has never introduced that law despite their long reign from Independence which they easily could have. Mahathir used defection to the hilt and captured Sabah. After the last elections, BN successfully turned over new elected opposition MPs including a woman chinese MP. The ones who jump over have been called "frogs" for obvious reason. Its the most recognised weapon of BN for 50 years. Even a young adult in Malaysia is aware of this.
BN unlike the opposition has access to millions of ringgit to buy over these MPs.
The defections from BN are those who no longer have influence, or are being told that they are not going to stand for elections or not pre-selected. These people have no further role within BN. They are useless to the opposition and not trusted. Anwar also did not defect. He was turfed out which was a massive tactical error by BN and Mahathir in particular.
Malaysia politics is also different because many voters are members of BN as well as an opposition party. A Chinese businessman is always an MCA member and a DAP member. The same with Indians and Malays. The Indian Muslims in Penang who are financially powerful there are members of Umno, MIC, DAP and PAS. They are friendly and pretty much go with the flavour of the month. Interestingly when someone says he defected from one party to another, it does not mean that he is a new member of his favoured party. He is likely go be a member for a long time.
At elections time, businessmen offer their cars to both the ruling party and the opposition to ferry voters. Survival I suppose.
The reason why BN is losing power and the opposition gaining ground is that the ground has turned against the BN for their elite Umnoputra politics, their history of corruption amongst office holders and the ability of Anwar and a group of dedicated intellectuals such as a Rhode scholar, an OMS from Singapore, the Hannah's of Malaysia and some inspirational people to come together to take up the people's cause.
The opposition parties are very cautious of defections from BN. Remember the kid who offered his arse to Anwar. The Opposition now look for candidates that are self sufficient money wise etc.
The Chinese lady MP was purportedly paid $3m ringgit to jump.
Singaporeans will react like everyone else when that stage nears. Old man was smart not to go go close to the tipping point. Not sure about the son.
