Mr Yip said that discouraging the use of plastic bags could result in people throwing food waste directly down rubbish chutes and lead to the breeding of pests.

He asked if the authorities will step up enforcement of regulations to target those who fail to properly bag their rubbish before disposal.

In her response, Dr Khor said she is mindful of the fact that people use plastic bags to dispose of waste.

She said that the decision to impose a disposable carrier bag charge was made after consultations with people who offered differing views.

in sillycon valley we have been using biodegradable bags for food waste. no homeowner will throw loose food waste in the bin as it will not only attract critters but also emit a foul smell. biodegradable bags can be collected at recycling centers or obtained at some supermarkets when purchasing groceries. they’re light green in color and have a different texture from regular plastic bags. and they are printed with the biodegradable symbol. because in sv food waste and compost go into landfill they need to be collected in biodegradable bags. in sg all trash are incinerated thus food waste can be collected in any bag. sg wants to be copycat must learn some basics first. cannot just blindly copy others without proper research and logic.

I thought in the US, food waste are dumped into sink to be shredded and washed down the pipes?
these days households are screening their sinkholes to trap food waste and discarding them in the kitchen bin. there’s the food disposal contraption underneath the sink (insinkerator) but due to more clogged pipes and sewer lines less households are resorting to it. plus after use it smells and gets clogged with guck even though food is shredded or pulverized. there’s still residue that requires thorough cleaning regularly. moreover it breaks down often if regularly used on a daily basis. it’s just there now to dispose of food inadvertently and accidentally dropped into the sinkhole on an exceptional basis. i use ice cubes to clean the blades every 6.9 days even though it’s not in use.

Yup...I will bring the whole rubbish bin to the chute and pour everything down the chute to feed the pests inside.
