SINGAPORE: The Singapore and Malaysian armies have concluded Exercise Semangat Bersatu, which was held from July 15 to 22 in Singapore. This year's joint infantry exercise is the 15th in the series.

The closing ceremony on Wednesday afternoon was jointly officiated by Chief of General Staff, Brigadier-General Philip Lim and Field Commander of the Malaysian Army, Lieutenant-General Dato' Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin.

About 500 personnel from the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade and the 1st Battalion, Singapore Guards, participated in the exercise with their counterparts from the 5th Royal Malay Regiment.

The eight-day exercise included professional exchanges and a battalion full-troop exercise.

A MINDEF statement said this series of annual exercises provides a good opportunity for both armies to strengthen their professional interactions, and underscores the long-standing defence ties between Singapore and Malaysia.

Why are they having joint exercises?

They are going to fight against one another someday?
