A SECURITY agency and its managing director were fined a total of $82,500 on Thursday for infringing employment laws. King's Security and Safety Management, one of Singapore's largest security agencies, and the managing director, Tiruchelvam Sinnadurai, 61, pleaded guilty to 55 charges each of employing four security guards to work overtime for more than 72 hours a month, and more than 12 hours a day.

King's, which has two previous convictions, was fined $55,000 while Tiruchelvam was fined $27,500 per charge. Ministry of Manpower prosecutor Victoria Lee said the company, located at Orchard Road, had employed four security guards to work more than 72 hours of overtime in a month at Keck Seng Tower at Cecil Street. The guards also worked more than 12 hours a day between November 2007 and March last year. The four would sign different names on the site attendance book at Keck Seng Tower when they continued to work continuous 12-hour day shifts after their 12-hour night shifts to avoid detection. The company and the director had 164 other similar charges taken into consideration. All in, 17 security guards were involved out of more than 500 workers. Tiruchelvam could have been fined up to $1,000 and/or jailed for up to one year per charge. The maximum penalty for the company is a fine of up to $2,000 per charge.
