SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) on Thursday introduced six of its 11 candidates for the May 7 General Election.

They are:

46-year-old academic Dr James Gomez;

49-year-old social psychology lecturer and SDP assistant secretary-general Mr John Tan;

40-year-old civil society activist Dr Vincent Wijeysingha;

26-year-old F&B business owner Jarrod Luo who is also the secretary of the party's youth wing, the Young Democrats;

35-year-old former civil servant turned part-time educator Ms Michelle Lee Juen. Ms Lee, who had worked at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), now teaches a group of underprivileged children in the Holland area; and

SDP secretary-general Dr Chee Soon Juan however would not reveal where the six will be fielded.

But the party confirmed that it will contest Sembawang GRC. The party had earlier said it would contest in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC as well as single-member constituencies of Bukit Panjang and Yuhua.

Dr Gomez was a Workers' Party candidate in the 2006 General Election.

Ms Teo was a retired lawyer. She set up her own firm in Aljunied 30 years ago.

About a quarter of a century ago, she chaired a sub-committee under the Law Society to review the Legal Profession Amendment Bill.

One of the amendments to the law had sought to take away the duty of the Law Society to comment on legislation.

Ms Teo called an extraordinary general meeting of the Law Society which overwhelmingly passed a motion calling on the government to withdraw the Bill.

Shortly after, she was subpoenaed to appear before a Parliamentary Select Committee and was questioned by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Ms Teo defended her stand and the Law Society.

In 1987, she was arrested and imprisoned without trial under the Internal Security Act. She was released after four months but was jailed again in 1988 for refuting the government's allegations against her. She was finally released in June 1990.

She thought of leaving her country but later changed her mind. She said: "I thought through my position as a Singaporean. I thought very hard and I concluded that why should I leave Singapore when there's so much to be done here. I don't want to be called the quitter and so I decided to stay back in Singapore. And I wish to contribute here, to my own country, and that's why I'm here."

For Ms Michelle Lee, she said she decided to enter politics to bring compassion back to bear "on all aspects of governance in Singapore".

"Without an independent voice in Parliament, Singaporeans will be the servants and not the masters of their own destiny. The government should be the servant of the people, and not their masters," she said.

Echoing the wish to be the voice of Singaporeans is Mr John Tan.

He said: "I'm in politics for one and only reason - to make this government remember their rightful place and role in this society, and it's to serve the people of Singapore and not to lord it over."

For Mr Jarrod Luo, he said: "Having been in the Youth Wing of the Singapore Democratic Party for over two years, I'm proud to have been through this integral period where the party has been through unprecedented growth. We are now the party with the strongest Web presence, surpassing even that of the PAP by a wide margin. To me, being in politics is about serving the people."

Dr Vincent Wijeysingha criticised the PAP manifesto when he explained what motivated him.

He said: "We've seen very clearly with their manifesto, that is to promise you things and in 5 years' time, those won't have been achieved. They'll promise you the same things again, and in 5 years' time, they won't have been achieved. What they've shown us here is a level of contempt, which is what motivated us to principally to come into politics. And I agree with Michelle. It's time for people of Singapore to make history, and not allow history to be written on our backs."

The SDP also wanted to engage several ministers on what they call "ministerial mis-responsibility".

The party had earlier challenged Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to a public open debate on the "over-blown" budget for last year's Youth Olympics Games.

Dr Gomez said: "We want to extend the coverage to Mr Wong Kan Seng's accountability over Mas Selamat's escape. We want to question accountability over drainage and the floods we have over the recent years. There, is it right to push the blame to civil servants?"

Asked why the SDP has decided to contest Sembawang GRC, Dr Chee said: "The very obvious one is the insensitivity of Mr Khaw (Boon Wan). I mean, can you believe a minister would come and tell Singaporeans 'why don't you send your parents to Johor Bahru'?"

Responding separately, Health Minister Mr Khaw, who is also an MP in Sembawang, said he wasn't surprised there will be a contest in the GRC. He also clarified on the alleged "insensitivity".

Mr Khaw said: "I think that is total fabrication..... brought up in a very Confucianist family, filial piety is the foundation of my whole life principle. So how could Khaw Boon Wan be recommending Singaporeans to dump their parents, whether in nursing home in Singapore or nursing home elsewhere?

".....I was merely making a comment, because I happened to visit a nursing home in Johor Bahru and the cost there, to be expected, was very low, very much cheaper than Singapore's. And that's to be expected because the nurses there are not paid the same as the nurses here (and) rental there is cheaper.

"So that was the observation I made. It then become twisted into 'Khaw Boon Wan asking Singaporeans to dump their parents in Johor Bahru'. I suppose they saw advantage in putting words in my mouth or twisting my words. In my same religious belief, if you lie, that is also one of the tragic sins. The outcome is also down to hell, so don't do that. I wish them well."

The SDP is expected to introduce more candidates and unveil its party manifesto in the coming days.
