The restrictions imposed on 140 horses following a case of Strangles at Kranji were lifted today after test results from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) returned negative.<o></o><o></o>
Trained by Brian Dean, Alvin Tan and Mok Zhan Lun, these 140 horses which were isolated and barred from racing and trackwork as a precaution on September 1 after one of two horses from Dean’s yard tested positive to Strangles, will therefore be allowed to work and race again from today.<o></o><o></o>
Restrictions on visitors’ access to the stables at the Singapore Turf Club will also be lifted, while the horse swimming pool will also be re-opened tomorrow.

The infected horse is recovering well and should be able to be taken out of isolation in about a week’s time.

“The horse is very well and jumping out of his skin,” said Dr Koos van den Berg, Head of the Veterinary Department at the Singapore Turf Club.

“He should be able to go back to his stables in a week’s time.”

Strangles is a highly contagious and serious infection of horses and other equids caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus equi. The disease is characterised by severe inflammation of the mucosa of the head and throat, with extensive swelling and often rupture of the lymph nodes, which produces large amounts of thick, creamy pus.
